Dear Frances,

Welcome back!

I'm setting up the system now, but it will probably be a day or so until
we can start data entry.  I think it would be useful to work out what
the information gaps are at present, and where we should and can best
fit into that.  My feeling is that there is information needed about
refugee camps (shelters) but also hospitals, and maybe other
infrastructure too.

Would be good to scope that out now, and get some sense of where
information may be coming from, and who will need it.  I'm making
changes to the system according to what I anticipate, and what would be
useful for other disasters too.

I've got a fresh wiki running on www.shelterfinder.org - lets use that
for any planning.

best wishes
Anand

We now have the GIS data on roads & villages, files are with Wendy who's working on it at the moment, copies of the files have been forwarded on to Kathryn Cramer & P. Anand, do you guys have a wiki link for SF where people can go and dump raw info on locations, coordinates, etc.?

thanks,
angelo.

Correction. The current wiki is here:

I've opened the GIS data you sent me - does this look about right?
Streets are green, villages are red. What do you need coordinates for
- the village points (in red)?

OK, here's what I've found vis a vis the shapefile to KML conversion - some expensive proprietary software will do it.  Someone's also come up with a beta that's free, and I've asked him for a copy.  There's also a trial version of something that 1) doesn't work because it's missing at least one DLL and 2) wouldn't convert enough features anyhow.  If that falls through, there's also a possibility of converting shapefiles to GML and then seeing if this GML to KML XSLT file I found works.

I'll also ask my coworkers about free map servers out there.

Hi Angelo,

That is the URL of the old KH Wiki - we have moved to one on the same site as SF now:

    http://www.shelterfinder.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
        or just plain
    http://www.shelterfinder.org/wiki/

Would be useful to see this GIS data - please zap it across, Angelo or Wendy.  I can also do rough geocoding dynamically for Indonesia dynamically using Geonames, as people add other data.   I'm attaching a dump of their data, although I'm not sure, however, how useful importing large tables of GIS data will be at this stage.  It may swamp the system and user interface for the mapping - probably better to start with key places we have some info for.  I'd started to process local village names to import, and assuming we'll want to link/add any snippets of information we can glean about locations like villages, shelters, hospitals.

It is an opaque clutter of information that I'm seeing at the moment...  I think we can help by mapping some of it, but setting up an obvious place where data can be maintained, status updated.  I'd find it useful to know what others are seeing and thinking, at this stage - lots of activity without clear shared direction will lead to wasted energies.

Below is the field structure I'm now using for ShelterFinder.  This is based on abstracting from the US-based shelter data, to try and accomodate village data from Pakistan last year.  There is useful information about Indonesian regional names/administrative structures at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdivisions_of_Indonesia

Will make some changes this morning, to allow direct entry to the site.  I'm then collecting someone from the airport so busy the rest of today.

Hi Anand
thanks for the updates and for setting up local wiki
I think you are ablosutely right that we do not need to import large files for which we have not use.
What I would identify/represent  to start with are the essential nodes that can be useful for logistic purposes
I followed you suggestion yesterday by starting with hospitals and I see you've followed up with more generic inftrascturure data

In addition to generic landmarks like hospitals, I think  we should wait from the input from the ground
(: hey give us the coordinates and qualitative information of the  emergency nodes as they are being set up) and we put them on our maps accordingly,
So that the resulting map will be reflecting the emergency network as it is now, rather than what itwas before the quake, and it can be used for resource allocation purposes

For this purpose specifically, I would hope that we can count on the collaboration of the international media currently covering the emergency to make sure that their reports include precise information and useful data about what they find. I was disapointed yesterday to read stories about 'hospitals need supply' and then a BBC report saying 'hospital have supplies' .    Maybe some supplies they have, and some they need,
I read a lot of reports where they say that the situation is desperate, but nobody can make a list of things that are needed and where to send them. if press reports could provide us with an additinal  level detail and relevant contact information when they  find out about a need, it would be very useful.

Wendy
any idea what kind of data is in those gis files? is it generic geospatial coord about the region, or specific locatoins inputted by emergency
workers?)
I mean,  do we seleect subsets that are relevant to us, or something that we have to import as a whole

also, I am confident that any software firm will grant us a temprorary license free of charge, please let me know
of any software that we need and I ll try to get a copy for us to use

cheers

What we seem to have now are the village and road layers, but no labels (which might be different layers).
