Dear collegues,
The last few weeks I hear from several sides plans, wishes and dreams to start the preparing the shelter coordination and response for the inevitable disasters that will strike The Philippines in the future.
Since I am leaving shortly, I want to take the opportunity to embrace and promote these intentions and maybe contribute to bringing them a little closer to reality by sharing what I have heard and seen.
- IFRC is exploring the possibilities to recruit local staff to prepare the shelter coordination and programs for the future.
- Habitat for Humanity mentioned that is is planning to set up a Disaster Preparedness / DM department. Potentially they are interested in contributing to coordination activities, as soon as it is gaining ground
- In a regional shelter meeting in bangkok 2 weeks ago ' strengthening local shelter capacity' was one of the reommendations
- The NHA and MMDA goverment department mentioned during the shelter workshop this week, that they want to become more involved into emergencies.
- Handicap International is talking to DIPECHO for funding of DP projects in Mindanao.
- IOM is leading the shelter cluster in Mindanao and is will lead the shelter cluster for the Typhoons as well.
- Spanish Red Cross is considering donating mobile shelter solutions (tents, kits) to communities that are likely to flood in the future again.
- and there are more ingredients,
I am not going to be more concrete. But in case you would like to share your plans / ideas even to take the initiative to set up a preparational meeting. You might as well use this email as a referral or source of inspiration.
Maybe just keep on using the Shelter google group for this purpose! There you will find all the names in members.
Good Luck,
