I was wondering whether anyone has any information on this photo of three of my great-great Aunts.

http://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/e/ed/Shellaker-7-3.jpg

Or indeed whether anyone is in possession of a higher quality print of which I might possibly have a copy?

The 'girls' appear to be looking over a gate or fence and the photo has been taken from a peculiar angle which would seem to indicate a lack of room to manoeuvre behind the photographer who is, oddly for the time, perhaps not using a tripod (i.e. the type of camera being used has a look-down mirror-type viewfinder).

Hi Colin

The picture was apparently taken at Billesdon Lodge Farm and I have a better copy which I have PhotoShopped to enhance areas which in the original were unclear and have also repaired and cleaned up

What is the best way to get it to you? Can I create a folder in Dropbox and make it accessible to the Shellaker Google group?

Gosh, that was a quick response.
Thanks David for identifying the location.
I believe that I have persuaded Dropbox to send you an invitation to a suitable share folder if you haven't already got access.   I look forward to seeing the cleaned up version of the photo.

What sort of date would you guess the picture was taken?

Many thanks!
C.

Ok, I’ve placed my repaired ‘3 sisters’ picture in one of my DropBox folders and invited you at you ‘myother…..’ email address and also the ‘shel...@googlegroups.com

Can you confirm if one or both of those addresses allows you to see the picture.

In regards to the time it was taken. I’ve compared it to the group photo of children plus Richard and Mary in front of the Lodge which I have estimated to be c.1901 and again, an estimation but I’d say the 3 sisters photo was between 1905 and 1910 although Nellie hasn’t aged much since the 1901 photo but Sarah & Emma more so.

I think you will be interested in where the photo was developed as it was not in Leicestershire!

OK, got that, thanks!
Nice clean-up job.

I would surmise from the evidence that Polly took the photo and took the film back home to get it developed. - would that make sense?

I think I've seen that photographer's address before somewhere - I'll have a poke around.

Hi Colin

Thank you, I’m cleaning up every single picture before placing on my website, which is time-consuming but worth the effort.

I think you surmise correctly. The sisters appear to be wearing their best clothes as they are similar to those in the c.1901 group photo in front of the Lodge, so it was a posed picture possibly taken on a ‘special occasion’ with all the family present but my immediate thought was ‘where’s Polly?’.

I first considered the picture, because of the Bournemouth connection, may have been taken by Frank but that was unlikely as Polly would most likely also have been in the picture. So I then assumed it was taken by Polly herself and hence the ‘less professional’ result to which you referred in your original email.

My thoughts exactly.

It's a good composition but taken at a slightly jaunty angle - something Frank would never have done.  My guess would be that he gave Polly some 'basic training' and a camera - which itself might have been a significant piece of luggage - and this is one of the results.  Even in bright daylight I'm pretty sure the film (or rather plates) of the time wouldn't have been fast enough for a handheld exposure - the camera must have been resting on a table or something.  Notice that they are all leaning on the fence in order to brace themselves for the several seconds exposure.  Is it just me or does Sarah look faintly amused by the whole thing?

Yes, Sarah is showing signs of a possible smile or grimace.

It looks as if the photographer has asked the sisters to fix their eyes on a point in the distance and hold - which Sarah and Nellie both appear to have done but not Emma who is looking directly at the camera.
