Hi All

To follow up Colin’s recent ‘who is…?’ I have one myself.

Many years ago I bought a postcard at an antique fair showing a picture of the Cottesmore Hunt, not because I have any interest in fox hunting, but it was addressed to a ‘Rifleman H Shillaker’. Any idea who he is?

Some details.

·         Dated 14.3.1919 and post marked the same day.

·         Posted in Langham in Rutland.

·         The address of  ‘Rifleman H Shillaker’ was in Co. Donegal, Ireland.

·         His regiment was the 7th Res. West Yorkshire Leeds Rifles.

·         It was sent by his mother.

·         She writes, amongst other things, a cryptic sentence…. ‘Had C letter from Victor this morning (unclear) and not say anything about been found.

Nicholas – I’m guessing this relates to ‘your tribe’ within our family.

And if there are any of his family out there who would like this postcard  I’d be delighted for them to have it.

Regards

David

The date would fit but I wonder about the Rutland link.

I think this is Harry Gamble Shillaker (1900-1972), son of Harry Bland Shillaker and Mary Elizabeth Goodacre. Harry is a descendant of John (1768, Ridlington), the "transition" Shillaker, a son of Thomas Shelacres and Mary Green.

I have accounted for all the Shillakers who served in WW1 and who feature in the FWR records, and he is not among these, probably because he was just a little too young for war service. The fact that he was in the reserves and in Ireland probably supports this.

The "Victor" mentioned is undoubtedly his brother Thomas Victor Bland Shillaker (1899-1966) who did serve in WW1, his card says he got the victory and British medals but no theatre, so he probably enlisted late as well.

Both of these brothers were born in Buckinghamshire, where their father was a gardener, but the family were in Billesdon by 1906, where Harry Sr. was probably working at Withcote Hall. They had moved to Langham by 1914, where their youngest son Austin Arnold was born. Austin had a long and distinguished military career, serving in Palestine and Germany, where three of his children were born. I am corresponding with two of these at the moment. They will be pleased to hear this news about their uncle and I would be glad to pass the card on to one of them.

Harry Bland and his family got quite involved in the Langham community, campanology and vegetable growing being his main pursuits, as the attached summary of extracts from the Grantham Journal will show.

Hi Nicholas

Very interesting and detailed information on the probable receiptant of ‘my’ postcard and I would be delighted to forward this onto you to pass onto his family. Can you let me have your address? Do you have my direct email to send it from when I joined this group?

And are you able to elaborate  on your comment …. the family were in Billesdon by 1906’. I was born in Billesdon and it was where, as I’m sure you know, my Shellaker ancestors lived for four generations, some of whom still live in that village. Is your reference to Billesdon the actual village or the district?

Regards

David:

Thanks for offering to do that, I have an email address for you, the one that comes up in the notifications of the forum posts.

I should have made Harry's location a bit clearer, it was Withcote, close to Withcote Hall, incumbent Edward Geoffrey Broadley Palmer, baronet. Not quite on the scale of Belton House, only 7 indoor staff, no butler or housekeeper.

Here is a link to the 1911 summary sheet, Harry's own schedule and the one for Withcote Hall.

Nicholas

Thank you for proving the link to Harry’s information – it continues to remain fascinating to view historical documents.

And if you let me have your address I will post Harry’s 1919 postcard for you to pass onto his kin.

Regards

David
