Dear fellow members of the extended Shellaker family.

As some of you are aware a few years ago I embarked on a seemingly never ending quest to build a website to hold all the information, documents and pictures which I and others have collected over the past decades.

Today I am delighted announced the launch of that website - it is now live and available to the world!

http://www.shellaker-family-history.com

Once you have viewed the website you will hopefully appreciate why it has taken longer than I expected to complete - the word count alone currently stands at over 110,000.  While building and populating the site I have made new discoveries, some of which are included in the sections I have highlighted below.

BIOGRAPHIES

It was always my aim with this website to go way beyond a mere list of events and dates, the lives of our antecedents are obviously far more complex than a set of dates and they deserve more. So I have written chronological narratives of the lives of...

WILLIAM & SARAH

From Lyndon then onto Tugby .... and what an interesting and often contradictory story has been produced. This was undoubtedly the most enjoyable and also revealing to research and write. It's a story which includes a criminal trial for both of them and time in jail for one.

POLLY

An obvious choice for a narrative, including a detailed examination of the factual evidence of her life in Grantham. Within Polly's 'biography' is a sub-section on FRANK and the CABLE FAMILY, this includes tales of the Workhouse and also, probably unsurprisingly, jail time. I trust the numerous decedents of Polly and Frank will consider I have done justice to their lives and I have no doubt whatsoever we know more about their lives at this moment in time than those closest to them when they are alive ever did!

EMMA

This is a tale that would not be out of place in any modern 'soap' - unmarried village choir mistress becomes pregnant, not once but twice by a man 12 years her junior. Her story include infant death, an adoption and an unsuccessful attempt by the parents to get back their child.

NELLIE

As with Emma, Nellie story is also eventful, not least as it includes a eye-witness account from Nellie's 12 year old daughter Olive of what I believe was the last major fire in the village of Billesdon some 85 years ago. Olive so vividly recalled the events of that fateful night to me back in January 2000 that the fire could have occurred only the week previously.  Nellie's story also include a short sub-section of her 'grandfather-in-law', firebrand preacher the Reverend John Field who played an influential part in her life.

VILLAGES

As most of you know, our known story starts in the village of Loddington in east Leicestershire (at least it did but maybe, just maybe, I've push back further in time beyond that village!). A highlight of the Loddington web pages are coloured photographs, in fascinating and wonderful clarity, of the original parish records and as you will see, these are incomparable with the scratched copies of the black and white microfilm which we have become familiar.  Loddington offers an interesting story of our family at a time when the English Civil War raged nearby and the Dodo still walked the earth.

LYNDON

From Loddington the family moved to the village of Lyndon in the beautiful and seemingly timeless county of Rutland and there they stayed for 143 years and five generations. At present, all these parish record, unlike those of Loddington, are the scratched copies of the black and white microfilm but over time and as funds allow I will replace these with top quality coloured images. If you follow the Twitter feed on the website you will receive updates on new content including when I place these coloured photographs of the original Lyndon records on the website. Within the Lyndon story is a sub-section combining the villages of Ridlington, Glaston and Manton.

SCOPE

Although I have included details of some members of the Shellaker family with whom I am not directly descended, I regret but I cannot increase the scope of the website to encompass the many Shillakers who lived in Lincolnshire.  However, as it is believed we share a common ancestry with those folks, I'm sure the descendants of the Shillakers will have an interest in the pages relating to Loddington and Lyndon (and maybe Lezaite).

THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT

In this section are the Wills of various members, and possible members, of the Shellaker family of which undoubtedly the most exciting is the Will of John Shellacare of Leziate in the County of Norfolk.  At the time this Will was written, in the year 1567,  he was a married man with a son therefore it is extremely probable he was over the age of twenty-one years. Accordingly he would have been alive during the reign of the infamous Henry VIII….

This Will is a fascinating and intriguing read.

TIMELINE

The website features a timeline in which I've listed events in the lives of our Ancestors within which I have added contemporary historical events. If you would like to add your own family information to the timeline please supply the relevant details.

ORIGIN?

Here I explore the various options for the origins of our family name. I also put forward an unproven theory that we originated from a place as far north in England as it is possible to be without being Scottish!

FORUM

One of the objectives of this website is to attempt to find answers to unanswered questions and to assist in that aim I have built a forum which I invite you to use if you can enhance the existing content. The forum will accept attachments such documents and photographs.

This website is not complete, it never will be. Together we can help add to what is a continuing story .....

Proof Reading

And finally, without a doubt this website will contain errors. If corrections to those items is information that would be useful to have in the public domain please use the Forum so others can see your comments and can view any fresh source data.

However I have no doubt there are many are typing mistakes and incoherent sentences. The cause of these errors is that I think far faster than I will ever type! My mind races ahead and my fingers desperately try to catch up

When you spot such mistakes I would encourage you to contact me with your corrections. For which you could use the 'Contact' form in the Footer of each page or via the mail icon in the Header.

I hope you enjoy reading the website and please forward onto others who are likely to be interested.

Brilliant!
David I can't work out how to post replies to the threads on the web site forum. Is there a signing-up process somewhere?

Hi Nicholas
Thank you. Let me check when I get home later today as I've only done it from the 'back end' so you can be the Guinea pigs who find out issues.

Hi Nicholas

OK, I did actually create a Registration Page but failed to provide a link for anyone to find it!

That link and an explanation of the registration process (part of which is my approval to prevent time-waster and avoid spambots) is now at the top of the Forum page. http://shellaker-family-history.com/forums/

If you plan to use the Forum could you let me know how it works for you?

Thank you

Thanks David.

Now you need to put the login link

http://shellaker-family-history.com/wp-login.php

somewhere more up front, I can only see it as a tiny link at the bottom of the new registration page.

Hi Nicholas

I'll add the new knowledge of the Palmer connection and update the relevant trees in the Wills and Lyndon pages during the week.

When doing so I will include your name as the source of the Palmer information as this website is, and will continue to be, a collaborative effort.

One question ....what were the individual files sizes of the two images you tried to upload? I had thought I'd set it up to receive large files so I need to check the backend.

I looked at your forum post entitled "Who is Mary Elwood?" referencing a 1760 Will but I can't find a reference to her anywhere in your time line. I think you have got two of the wills back to front there.

You transcribe the 1814 will of Francis Shellaker (1733-1815), with references to Brooks, Lowe and Buck. But this is the will of
Francis (1689-1776) made in 1760.

You transcribe the 1760 will of Francis Shellaker (1689-1776), with references to nephew Richard. But this is actually the 1814 will, and the image and transcription are incomplete, you only mention the nephew Richard, the other beneficiaries are niece Hannah Baker; nephews Francis and Thomas Shellaker, Joseph and Thomas Walter, John and William Palmer; nieces Mary Elwood and Sarah Walter.

Reworking my analysis which I just posted on the forum, it seems that John and William Palmer are in fact cousins once removed in the 1814 will they are mentioned in, since Elizabeth Walter their mother is a first cousin of Francis (1733-1815).

If you agree I will revise my post.

Nicholas

David I think I'm getting a bit confused (doing it while watching the tennis doesn't help!) so I take back most of what I just wrote.

Hi Nicholas

From my exercise all family history starts with confusion before moving toward clarify.

Let's address MARY ELWOOD first...

Mary is mentioned on Page 2 of the Will of Francis Shellaker (1689-1776) which was written in 1760.

http://shellaker-family-history.com/portfolio/1760-francis-shellaker-of-lyndon/2/

She feature in the 'Part 2' section of the Will

The Forum entry....

"Mary Elwood, is mentioned in the Will of Francis Shellaker (1689-1776) which was written in September 1760. She is identified as a niece.

But what was her connection to Francis?"

That appears to be ok I think?

Regards

That's fine David. I had referred to a typewritten list of probates someone sent me many years ago, and the two wills are back to front on that.
I think Mary Elwood is Mary Walter (1708) a daughter of Mary Shelacres and William Walter and therefore a first niece of Francis and so accurately described in the 1760 will.
There is a marriage of Mary Walter to Thomas Elwood of Empingham at Stamford St Michael on 11 Dec 1752.
She is rather mature, but then so was her sister.
Nicholas
