The other day I was searching for something (I can't even remember what it was now) and at the back of a book shelf I came upon a small pile of books which I had probably pushed right to the back for safe keeping at some time. There were a couple of family bibles and an old and not-too-battered 'autograph album'.
I have always been familiar with this book (or so I thought) and always understood it to have belonged to my Mother as I clearly remembered seeing messages in it from her Brother Arthur (known as Wilf) - most particularly the "Elephant's Eggs" nonsense rhyme.
However, upon examination, I found to my great surprise that it must have been passed to her long ago by *her Mother* as the inside front cover makes it clear that it was a 21st birthday present to Lizzie from her Auntie Nellie.
Apart from the most recent, (i.e. 1930s & 1940s) comments by Wilf (noted above) the album is populated mainly by dedications made by family and friends during Lizzie's visit to Leicestershire in 1917 - many people with whom we are very familiar, e.g. Nellie, Sarah, Emma, Sam Geary, Annie Geary.
We also have entries by Lizzie's Brother Dick (John Richard Brown) and his wife-to-be Lily Stratford.
I believe that file A03 is Lizzie's sister May - please could anyone verify the signature?
Likewise I am reasonably confident that file A17 is John Shellaker and that A09 is Agnes Emma, his wife (David - can you confirm these signatures?)
There are a number of names who may or may not be family members which I do not recognise at all:
A04 A. Stone 29 April 1918
A10 Jack Livingston
A14 I or J. Moore 29 Sept 1917
A20 Beryl Roberts 7 August 1917
As for file A16, I am quite baffled by the A-something signature.
All comments and elucidations welcomed!
