Hello all,

I'm planning on running a robotics night at the hackspace on Thursday evenings, would anyone like to join?

The plan so far is to start on projects that have been well documented and a good community and once learnt the basics, then go on from there.

The projects that stand out from my initial research are (there will be plenty out there so if you have other ideas or you want to work on your own project, that's great too):

Linorobot looks simple(r) and more managable size to learn the basics: https://github.com/linorobot/linorobot/wiki/1.-Getting-Started
A little more complicated but massive comunity : http://inmoov.fr/head-3/

I've been speaking to Andy and Janine and they said running a night on your own (thats if no one wants to join) can be tiring and it would help if i had backup incase im ill/holiday ect.  Would anybody be able to help out if im unable to attend? If you put your name forward and can't do it for whatever reason, that's fine.

In terms of time, I was thinking same as Monday sesion so 6PM while 9PM.

Let me know of any thoughts, ideas or just generally any comments, all welcome :-)

Thanks

Yeah, I'm aiming for a group project Matt, at the same time a general group of people interest in the same topic.  Having a group makes it more fun, you can bounce ideas off each other, help each other past any hurdles.

Thanks

Hello,

We will be running a robotics evening this Thursday on the 25th if anyone would like to join?   We will be following Lino Robot and having a general discussion regarding robotics.  If anything wants to come, we will be meeting at 6:30 at the hackspace or just come later if that's better for you.  If the timing is a issue for anyone, please let me know.

From discussing robotics with people, most people that showed interest are not sure where to start and want to learn as a group.  I'll be bringing a laptop with Robot Operating System installed and the components to make the lino robot so we can get straight into a project.  The rest we'll learn together.   Like I said if anyone has a project they want us to work on as a group or individually, we can talk about that too.

Thanks

I'll come down this Thursday, at least. I'd be interested to get a feel for what this SIG might be and might become. Certainly a cool idea.

See you tomorrow,
Alex

We will be running a robotics again Thursday 1st of February if anyone would like to join?   Last week we built the chassis lino robot, configured the Raspberry pi and ROS - robot operating system .  This week we will be wiring up the sensors, motors and teensy microcontroller  (android compatible)  and some more on ROS.  If anything wants to come, we will be meeting at 6:30 at the hackspace or just come later if that's better for you.  If the timing is a issue for anyone, please let me know.

We also discussed where we want the group to go.  The general consensus was building a project together and inmoov.fr is our ambition. It's bigger enough for everyone to get involved, technically challenging and looks awesome! The picture below is what inmoov looks like, Its nearly all 3d printed except electronics and im sure we'll put a sheffield hackspace twist along the way.  It will take a while to build inmoov and will cost a bit but the cost will be in stages.  Does anyone have any components or things they could donate to the project, or know where we can scavenge any from maybe old equipment?   Servos seam to be the most costly part so if anyone has any that would be great, even its just to get us started.  Oh and plastic for the printer, is there any place we can that cheap if we buy bulk?

This is a list of components but im sure with the knowledge at the space, we can improvise with available components

I'll certainly be there this week. Sounds like it might be time to add it to the calendar, eh?

Nice one, Alex.

Question

Is this replacing the CNC group on a Friday (nut maybe on thirsday) or
as well as ??

There is no problem either-way, it is pointless though advertising a SIG
with no one in it.

I don't doubt it, but the question remains.

Is this instead of the CNC+Machine Building group on Friday or as well as.

If everyone that comes along to teh CNC& Machine building SIG on a
Friday night is now doing robotics instead (no reason why not) then we
need to take the empty Friday SIG off the calendar.

This is not a question of SIG v SIG merely one of whether the Friday CNC
& Machine Building SIG is now empty and therefore a SIG no more.

A group of zero without leaders is not a group and should be removed
from the events and calendar lest folk turn up expecting it to be there
and personned and are then disappointed.

We should reasonably expect SIG's whatever their stripe to come and go
in line with the members wishes.

To bastardize a quote from the comedy mesiah (not the nine o'clock news)

Where two or three are gathered together in common aim, there may the
SIG be performed.

Except Fridays is without leader (matt can not make it any more) and as
I understand it the attendees are now doing a different SIG on Thursday.

There is no reason why they can not do both. It is not lcear at the
moment. Hence the question

C'mon, get a grip guys, this is not a difficult question and should not
be contentious in anyway.

I will be there for the Radio & Mesh Networkings SIG as per usual on a
Friday. Bout time I got on with a bit more of this, instead of being
distracted into other things.

TBH there is no real reason why the CNC & Machine building could not be
rolled into the Thursday night session. A robot is a robot by any other
name. Whether the robot is Anthropomorphic or Cartesian it is still a robot.

Key-holders are of course free to turn up at any time they please so
could still appear on Friday evenings if they so wished (just like any
other night/day). Without it being formaly a SIG.

I can not see the point though of advertising a SIG that is empty and
leaderless.

The benefit to formally declaring a SIG is it opens up the space to
non-keyholders. Which is a good thing. But has to have keyholders
attached to enable it. It's an opening/closing up thing.

If there is no one to open up for non-keyholders when we have formally
declared and advertised a SIG I can quite understandably see anyone
turning up that is a non-keyholder getting upset. Must admit I would.

Friday nights woodworking SIG seems to have died too, although it could
be too early into the new year to tell.

I quite like the idea of SIG's being reasonably fluid and up to members
to have/person them or not. When they are empty though we should
consider them defunct and remove them from the calendar. Freeing up the
slot for another group of members to potentially convene a new SIG in
that slot.

Only Mesh Networking is listed on the calendar for Friday nights. So, no
we are not advertising a SIG that doesn't happen! Has been this way for
some time!

Yes, we could merge Robotics into the Friday night, but that is not up
to me!

Alex Kelly is a keyholder and is taking point on the Robotics Group!

The inmoove looks pretty cool but as you observe is a lot of 3D printing.

It could even end up as the first open source puker android, that would
be awesome.

Ban all potential future members called Reese, Connor or Dekker.

For bulk filament pricing I would be approaching Darren (WeDo3DPrinting)
or Scott (cant remember the name of the company sorry)

No idea what they could offer till you approach them. But if you are
printing and blogging something as awesome as this they may consider
some form of sponsorship deal (filament and or discount for mentions and
product placement).

Given the amount of 3D printing that needs doing it could also be worth
your while to have a talk with Mat SB and see where we are up to with
getting those 2 3D printers upgraded and into service. He may be snowed
under and appreciate someone taking some of this off his hands.

Servo's are going to be more problematic, but do-able.

You could buy them a smaller quantity at a time from aliexpress or
hobbyking. But may get a better deal buying in a lummp (consider group
purchasing and including members that want servos but are not that
bothered about the inmoov and or robotics per ce) via alibaba or some
such B2B based site. have a word with Paul Beech he may have some useful
contacts in shenzen/china that could help here.

If you are bulk purchasing quality servo's I would be interested in
enough for a hexapod + small qty for stock + spares, or some such. Not
that I am planning any robotic stuff in the near future, but would take
advantage of joining in a bulk purchase to get quality for a good price.

Looking at the aims of the Robotics SIG (building an INMOOV) on researching this one person(Kyle Campbell) reckons to print just the legs takes 6 spools of PLA and 642 hours of printing time alone . (So 1 machine printing for the full 3 hour SIG once a week) that would be approx 4 and a bit years to complete the legs alone.) Personally I think it is a very exciting group project and if the SIG gets some legs (pun intended) we may see it on many more days. ;-)

On plastics PLA will be doable, but I would expect better plastics to be
worth using/trialing.

PET, Polycarb and Nylon spring to mind. Depending on the components and
their anticipated wear and tear modes.

As ever though Do-ocracy rules apply.

Robot Thursday is here again. We will be carrying on with wiring up the sensors, motors and teensy microcontroller (Android compatible)  and working and configuring ROS.  If anything wants to come, we will be meeting at 6:30 at the hackspace or just come later if that's better for you.  If the timing is a issue for anyone, please let me know.

If anyone else is keen to come in this evening, I am more happy to open up. I am intending to come in this evening to finish one or two bits and bobs on the battery system. I'll be in from 6:30, but if no one is there in the first hour or so I'll probably lock up and go home - I feel like it's probably going to be a little cold in there to stay all evening on my lonesome.

All the equipment is at the space, however when I moved the virtual machine with the ROS development environment from my laptop to the Windows desktop in the space its gives a error :

"The virtual machine 'RosIndigo64Bits' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1). More details may be available in 'C:\Users\SHHmakers\VirtualBox VMs\RosIndigo64Bits\Logs\VBoxHardening.log'.

Does anyone have knowledge on virtual box and how to resolve it?   I created a post on the virtual box forum but no decent information on how to fix it in my particular case.   The post is located here with log files.

I tried to create a fresh "from scratch" VM on the Windows box in hackspace and it completely refused to work. So probably something which isn't working in this Windows setup.

Well I'm not sure what we will be doing tonight but I will be down to open up. I do have a VM on my laptop and a stock version of Ros on it. We can start the process again if nessacery.

If not I will just be doing the CNC machine all night

Cheers matt, sorry I didnt get back to you, it was a busy week last week.  I'll try and get it sorted this week so we have a VM running in the hackspace all the time.  I'll be on snow boarding in 2 weeks time so wont be able to attend that session too.  I'll be there this Thursday.

Thanks

There are a couple of PC's on top of the 3D printing cabinet.

Dunno what they are or what their status is. My presumption unless told otherwise is that they are waiting to be hacked or binned. If someone knows, shout up.

If in doubt take them down and have a look see if they would be usable. Inspect them for Do not Hack Stickers. This was our favored advisory for kit that was useful/earmarked once upon a time (and we should be refreshing it).

Best advice is pick the best one for your needs that does not have a "Do Not Hack" sticker on it and put a minimalist OS on (your choice, you will be supporting it). if the spec is nearly there but a little short somewhere or other, flag it up on email here someone may have bits they could donate to your project to upgrade it with.

Note: The Hackspace has no Windows Licenses, so I would advise putting something easy like Debian (XFCE) on and running up virtual box on there. Ubuntu works equally well. You can of course run up other OS's in the virtuals, so the OS of the hosting PC does not materially matter at all, other than does it take up too much room/processor power robbing it from your virtuals.

If any or both of the boxes is not worth the space they are taking up, sticker them with a bin by date and add them to the bin pile, emailing everyone.

When binning it might be worth keeping some useful bits off them like Processor Heat sink, ATX PSU (we recycle them as bench PSU's), fans, frisbees and magnets from out of the hard drive. etc. TBH though much of this stuff is a regular-ish donation so could just be binned unless someone else wants to take them out.

I have a whole pile of PCs that can be cannibalised, should want anything.

I'm down tonight for robotics. I'll do an inventory of pc stuff in the space before we start.

I'll be down
