Heritage Lecture: In-person and Online Streamed Tickets Available

The Surprising Residents Of Randall Street In 1891 - it's not all metal!
Presented by John Chapman

Wednesday 18th August 2021 from 7 to 8pm

Note: this is a 'hybrid' event. A limited number of in person tickets are available for the Makerspace and in addition tickets for the simultaneous online streaming.

Little Sheffield in 1891 was predominantly occupied by metal workers in various forms. However other occupations lived amongst them. Where did the come from? And how did they live?
This talk has a quick look at the history of the English census, and then at what the 1891 census can tell us about the occupants of Randall Street. Randall St was typical of the area and gives us a good cross-section of working-class society at the time. We will also look at the lives of a few individuals employed at Portland works, and how the census can build a picture of their lives and struggles.

There will be an opportunity for the in person audience to ask questions at the end of the lecture. The live stream audience can also submit a question at the end.

About our speaker:

John Chapman is a genealogist based in Sheffield with over twenty years of experience. He has had a career in the Royal Air Force and running his own business, before embarking on his present journey as a genealogist six years ago. He started, as most people do, researching his own family, and has completed over thirty projects for people who want answers about their family history. John uses traditional research and DNA mapping to solve historical and recent family queries.

He is currently writing a book on the nail industry in South Yorkshire based on real families of iron miners, forgers, nailers and traders.

John is a active member of the Guild of One-Name Studies, the British Association of Local History and the Society of Genealogists.
