"Down Fair Cambridge Street That Was Once Coalpit Lane": an account of certain events in an ancient Sheffield street, with musical illustrations. Presented by Robin Hughes

Wednesday 28 JULY 2021 from 7 – 8pm

Note: this is a 'hybrid' event. A limited number of in person tickets are available for the Makerspace and in addition tickets for the simultaneous online streaming.

Our speaker tells us:

"The denizens of dreary Coalpit Lane wanted to move it upmarket, so they named it after a duke - or was it a monumental error? There's a tale that begins with a man walking into a bar, but he goes home in an ambulance, and you may not see the punchline coming. We'll examine some mysterious stones and learn what cutlers get up to on Mondays. We'll hear how a footsore missionary brought "back to basics" religion to Sheffield. There'll be a nod to one of the city's great lost theatres, and a moving account of the tragedy of Leah's Yard. Every building tells a story, but not all are true, and are some better forgotten? For tales of mayhem, murder, misfortune and Methodism, join us on a virtual, largely unsuccessful, but at any rate tuneful pub crawl "Down Fair Cambridge Street That Was Once Coalpit Lane". All human life, and death, is here."

There will be an opportunity for the in person audience to ask questions at the end of the lecture. The live stream audience can also submit a question at the end.

About our speaker:

Robin Hughes is our guest speaker. He was born in Sheffield in the 1960s and growing up in the city saw how its appearance was constantly changing. Initially excited by new developments, he has become increasingly concerned at the loss of heritage, especially historic buildings, and with them character and sense of place. Now retired after a career in Information Technology, he is a trustee of Joined Up Heritage Sheffield and a committee member of Hallamshire Historic Buildings, campaigning for a more positive attitude to heritage and researching the stories that give the historic environment meaning and value. In private life he is also a singer, pianist, and occasional composer.

In person attendees please bring you e-ticket with you to check in.
Live steam tickets holders will receive a link to access the Lecture on booking.
