Unsupported - A public meeting about the cuts to social care and support
As the recession hit in 2009 Frances Potter (Sheaf CAB) noted that “even though times were always hard, there was a strong belief in progress; but now for some people these beliefs are fading”, four years on she reflects on the impacts of benefit cuts and how the welfare reforms are failing to succeed even on their own terms.
Dr Simon Duffy is Director of the Centre for Welfare Reform and noted in a recent report that the burden of the austerity measures fall on the most vulnerable, “As need and poverty increases, so does the intensity with which the cuts are targeted, the very opposite of fair”. Here he speaks on how welfare reforms contribute to making people who are unemployed or disabled by far the hardest hit by Government austerity measures.
Followed by a choice of discussions to join, hosted by: Unite Community Sheffield – Community campaigning against the cuts to social support. Centre for Welfare Reform - Campaigning and local and national organisation. Sheaf CAB – How to get help and make your voice heard. Sheffield Equality Group - Creatively publicising and protesting the cuts.
Thursday 11th April. Tea & biscuits from 6:30pm
Sheffield Quaker Meeting House, St James St, S1 2EW. Hosted by Sheffield Equality Group. Free but donations gratefully received!
