Hi, this is Joyce Lau. I am Mira Loma High School's Key Club
Secretary. Mira Loma is in D44S in CA. I just wanted to send out a
little blurb about this community service opportunity to all the Key
Clubs. The program is called the APPLE Project.
The APPLE project is a team of volunteers from the USA that teach
English to children in China via Oovoo. Oovoo allows people to connect
to one another from all over the world using a webcam. While most
schools in China currently offer courses in English, many students do
not have the opportunity to learn English from a native speaker unless
than can afford a private tutor. So, we aim to help level the playing
field for Chinese youth by offering children the chance to interact
with native speakers of English through the APPLE Project. For more
information, you can go to www.theappleproject.org or email me for
more info. If anyone is interested, please tell them to contact me!
The Basics
Who? You! Any English native speaker in high school.
What? Teaching English to children in China
When? Class times are flexible but are usually at night. The sessions
are once a week for an hour.
Where? The schools we currently serve are in Guang Dong and Fu Jian
Province, but the APPLE Project hopes to expand to other parts of
China. All of the volunteers are from the US, but you are more than
welcome to join, regardless of where you live, if you are an English
native speaker.
Why? Learn about the Chinese culture. Get community service hours for
school. Make a difference.
What do you need? All you need is internet access, a computer,
headphones or speakers, webcam, and a microphone (which usually comes
with the webcam).
It would be great if you could all spread the word about this program
to your members! Thanks so much!
Joyce =)
Note: You do not need to know Chinese to join.
