I'm planning to install a transponder in my 2CT and as I understand it, an external mount is the only option due to the carbon fuse. I'm curious if others that have done this can offer examples or suggestions. Discus or otherwise.

There is a technical bulletin from SH that describes mounting the antenna on top of the fuse behind the engine bay but it would be much easier to mount it behind the canopy and in front of the engine bay.

I'm not sure if mounting it closer to the cockpit presents a health hazard or if the same carbon fuse that prevents the signal from exiting the fuse would also protect me from any signal coming back in.

Thanks

I installed a fin transponder antenna according to the manufacturer's drawings in my Discus 2b on the fuselage bottom offset a bit to one side of the gear (I may still have the pdfs of the factory drawings).  Although there is carbon, I also installed an aluminum ground plane on the inside.  You have to be careful loading the fuselage into and out of the trailer, but it works fine.  I have seen an installation on top of the fuselage behind the canopy, so either would probably be ok.
