Have any of you guys considered making a tshirt, where the entire outside is covered in pixels (or at least a patch on a chest to start with). Then, users can (somehow through USB or another method) upload their own images to be displayed on the tshirts.

This would create fully customisable clothing - which is probably the future of fashion.

Is something like this possible or am I dreaming? I'm more a software guy and so this is very much a hardware project.

Not quite what you had in mind, but take a look at this: http://www.firebox.com/product/1458?itc=81&src_t=nwt&src_id=166

Thats cool, so could we build a tshirt where we could upload images to it which would display? The idea being you could wear the same tshirt everyday, but keep changing the image (hygiene notwithstanding!). I think tshirts with customisable images displayed would be pretty cool. Then, if you could cover the whole tshirt in pixels, you could create your tshirts in paint everyday :)

I think that would be fun to make (and would sell!). My mate owns Firebox.com so could easily get it sold on there to start with.

You could still do some pretty cool stuff with only e.g.10x10 pixels.
Its limiting but it'd probably lead to some really interesting things;
like what about crowds of people!

I wonder if there is any interesting/cheap ways to build something
like this if you don't get caught up worrying about LCD style high res/
colour? E.g. the pixels could be LEDs, but there are probably other
interesting ways to make pixels too (chemical, fibre optic,
electromagnetic, other "smart" materials?? need some random
inspriation here i think). I saw a nice example where a wall of pixels
was made of wooden blocks on servos :) Don't forget scan based imaging
too.

There is also Persistence of Vision stuff e.g. a POV shoe/trouser leg/
glove. But i think it'd be cooler to come up with some form of pixel/
scan based surface.

I think a novel pixel/scan design is probably the really interesting
thing, so probably looking to borrow from some technology of a totally
unrelated field!

I bet those spectrum analyser ts can be hacked to drive the displays
with something custom.

Example pixel shirt here: http://www.cs.colorado.edu/%7Ebuechley/diy/diy_tank.html

Her site has lots of stuff on it which feels pretty much state-of-the-
diy-art for this kind of thing, so is probably a good starting point
(e.g. conductive thread).

For LEDs, you can get really small surface mount ones, and i'd imagine
they are bright enough to mount behind a material rather on top of it
which might give a look better than "look at my elecronics project
glued to my tshirt.

In fact, choosing clothing with a heavyweight material/style rather
than a cheap tshirt would probably make this easier. How about a
puffer jacket/vest where each panel can light up :)
