St. Louis man accidentally shot by officer faces charges

ST. LOUIS • A St. Louis man has been charged with several felonies after police say he was accidentally shot on Wednesday in a struggle with a St. Louis officer.

Myron Gunter, 31, of the 4000 block of Botanical Avenue, was charged Thursday with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and one count each of resisting arrest, assault of a law enforcement officer, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Gunter was wounded in the back and was hospitalized but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, police said. The incident happened late Wednesday afternoon in the 3800 block of Meramec Street. Police stopped Gunter's car because it matched the description of one in which somebody was reportedly impersonating a police officer. But Gunter pulled the car to the curb, got out and ran, police said.

He was holding his waistband as if to conceal a weapon, and an officer, believing Gunter was carrying a gun, took out his gun as he ran after him, police said. The officer grabbed Gunter and they struggled, and as they fell to the ground, the officer's gun went off, wounding Gunter. A female passenger in Gunter's car threw two guns from the car when the car was pulled over, moved to the driver's seat, drove east on Meramec, but was later caught. Both guns were recovered at the scene.

The officer, 27, has been on the force just over three years. As is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting, the officer has been placed on administrative leave. The investigation is ongoing.

Are there any efforts to get a Neighborhood Protective Order for these two individuals?
