I'd seriously recommend to go with Gosu (http://code.google.com/p/gosu/), until shattered ruby gets a jump-start. Learning to build games with the library has been simple and easy for most, especially thanks to a good compilation of examples, quick response by the chief developer and a decent API.

I built a 3d multiplayer on ruby with Gosu, by incorporating simple opengl and using the eventmachine library for networking. It was a great way to learn and have fun in the world of game development. Try it.

I'll agree that if it is stopped, that that is a shame.Understood, though,
as it is a very ambitious undertaking!
Meantime, have you looked at Gosu?
I was very impressed with the little bit of time I spent exploring that.
