Dear Brent,

I really appreciated the YouTube video where you're grinding the primary bevel of that old Stanley plane blade on the Crystolon stone. After you have finished grinding with this coarse Crystolone stone, how do you go about flattening the stone? Do you use a lapping plate or sandpaper on a granite surface plate? If so, what grit?

Thanks for any advice you care to offer.

Chris

Hi Chris

When I grind I use the entire surface - except for about half an inch at
either end.

I move the blade from side to side, even let the side of the blade
extend off the stone. After grinding dozens of blades I still have not
bothered flattening the stone.

Note that I grind the primary, don't actually hit the edge itself, so
the flatness of the stone is not crucial. I only do the edge on 3M
abrasives on glass, which is always flat.

You can get the stone flat enough on a cement sidewalk - one that does
not have too many stones on the surface. Keep the sidewalk wet, rub
vigorously.

I lay a 120 grit drywall sanding screen on glass to refresh my coarse
oil stones. I didn't have any luck with my Crystolon stone until I did
this, india stones aren't as bad. Give it a try!

Tony

Thanks for the tip. I have some drywall sheets and will give them a try.
I also have some out of flat oil stones.
