Happy Thursday!

Yeah, sorry I can’t write Happy Friday, but it’s my Friday! 😊  Celebrating 26 years of marriage so you are receiving these a day early!

Most people don’t know that you can report certain incidents online with our non-emergency services. This assists patrol officers to be available with priority calls.

Happy Friday!!!

Hope you all enjoyed all the SNOW we didn’t get! 😊  This week was a little better compared to the last two weeks regarding crime.

Below is some important information regarding those text messages we all get, please read and share.

Have you received unsolicited text messages with an unfamiliar or strange web link that indicates a USPS delivery requires a response from you?  If you never signed up for USPS tracking requests, then don’t click the link! This type of text message is a scam called Smishing.

Real USPS Text Message:

Below is an example of signing up for legitimate USPS text messages.  Notice, the USPS short code (the 5-digit phone number that sent the message) is 28777.  Also notice that there are not links in the text message at all. Only the tracking number.  The only way to truly not get smished, is to go directly to the USPS tracking website and enter the tracking number yourself.    https://tools.usps.com/

An example of a real text message from the USPS

Whether the text claims to be from USPS, UPS, or FedEx, they share a few common warning signs:

1.Fake tracking numbers:

Scammers may include fake tracking numbers in their text messages to make them seem more legitimate.

2.Request for payment

Be cautious of texts claiming that you need to pay a fee or provide credit card information to receive a package.

3. Mismatched URLs:

If you do click on a link, make sure the URL matches the company's official website. Scammers often use URLs that are similar but not exact.

Remember, USPS will never send unsolicited text messages asking for personal or financial information. The best thing to do is delete it. You can also report the incident to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which is responsible for protecting the mail system and enforcing laws that ensure public safety.

For more information on how to sign up for official USPS text messages, the scam itself, or how to report the scam, check out the following websites:

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!

Beth
