CORRECTION:
       4.      Teams seeded 5 to 12 will play the "wildcard round". This will result in the top teams to the top 8. Teams 1 through 4 will get a bye week.

Varun,
Thanks for catching this. I meant to type 5 through 12, will play 4 wild card games while 1 through 4 gets a bye week.

Ganesh

Hello Ganesh,

I think it is a very good and fair format for the playoffs. I just had a question regarding the wild card games

  1. Teams seeded 8 to 12 will play the "wildcard round". This will result in the top teams to the top 8.
How will the wildcard round games be reducing the number of teams from 12 to 8?

Will the top 4 teams in the league go through to the quarters while 5-12 play in the wildcard round?

Thanks

Hi ECs,

The NECA Board has been in discussion for the past several weeks to finalize the NECA 2015 tournament playoff format.
As you know, our league is growing in size and it is becoming really big. If everything goes well, I anticipate a growth of 3 to 5 clubs/teams each year for the next few years.

Just to give you an idea, we turned down 3 teams because they approached us late. Ya... We are becoming more popular and getting more visibility due to our web presence now!

Anyway...As a result of our growing size, we had to be creative on how we manage our league format and playoffs. And after some significant discussions and weighing in multiple options, the NECA Board has decided to follow the following playoff format for the 2015 season.

  1. Season games: Each team gets 6 (in group) games + 2 (out of group) games for a total of 8 games in a 9 week window.
  2. Playoffs: At the end of 9 weeks, ALL teams (from all groups) will be sorted together in the points table based upon NECA sorting rules we have been following for years. Please refer to NECA Rules & Regulations # 60 through 67 for points and sorting information.
  3. The top 12 teams will move to the playoffs. This is roughly 1/2 the number of teams. Please note that the top 12 teams may not result in equal distribution in each of the group. And this is intentional to even out performances within each group and only honor the true top 12 performing teams. This will also keep the tournament interesting as every game will count even if you are in the top 4 of each group. You can't take any game easy!
  4. Teams seeded 8 to 12 will play the "wildcard round". This will result in the top teams to the top 8.
  5. The next three weeks will be the Quarters, Semis, and Finals. In each of these rounds, the top seeded team will host the bottom seeded team. For example, Team seeded 1 will host team seeded 8, team 2 will host team 7 etc., in the quarters.
  6. All the playoff games, including the wild card round will receive neutral umpires. Teams responsible for neutral umpires will be announced as we get closer to the corresponding playoff weeks.

The playoff impact on 2016 season:
As stated earlier, the size of our league is growing steadily and we are at the cusp of growing too big. As a result we will be using a "Divisional" format for 2016 season.
Here are the important points about this format:

  1. The top 12 teams that qualifies for the playoffs in the 2015 season will make it to Division A.
  2. Teams seeded 13 through 21 from 2015 season will form Division B.
  3. Further grouping may be done inside each division to manage the game formats. That will be considered next year.
  4. Any new teams that are inducted into the league will automatically be inducted into Division B.
  5. Divisional finals will be played within the division.

[The following points have not been fully discussed and the NECA board will discuss this at an appropriate time after this season is over]
  1. Inter divisional movement: Each year, there will be some shuffling of teams between the divisions to encourage good performance. Teams seeded 8 through 12 in Division A will be demoted to Division B while teams seeded 1 through 4 in Division B will be promoted to Division A.
  2. Depending upon weeks available, we may consider a game between the divisional finalists. But, this will may not count towards any seeding.

Please note that NECA ECs are the first ones to hear the playoff format and its impact on the following season.
Any comments/concerns will be addressed over the next week and we will announce this to the general group next week.

Hope you like this format. This will address the growing needs of NECA!

Go NECA!

Regards,
Ganesh on behalf of NECA Board
