Why We Must Listen to the Marian Messengers of Our Time
The Heavenly Response to the “Century of the Devil”
Felipe Pérez Martí
Seattle, December 2025
On October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had the terrifying vision that changed the course of the 20th century. After celebrating Mass, he heard a dialogue between God and Satan. The devil boasted that he could destroy the Church if given enough time and power. God granted him one century – roughly from the late 19th century to the late 20th – to try.
That century became known, in the words of many saints and popes, as the century of the devil. It was the bloodiest, most anti-Christian century in history: two world wars, the rise of atheistic communism, millions of martyrs, abortion legalized worldwide, sexual revolution, collapse of the Christian family, and a tsunami of pornography and occultism. The “New Age” movement surged with force to confuse many Christians, especially Catholics – with practices like Reiki, A Course in Miracles, channeling, crystal healing, and the exaltation of “personal enlightenment” over revealed truth. The ideology of “freedom” in moral issues – which in reality represented slavery to sex, alcohol, drugs, and materialism – was spread all over the world. And the woke culture has confused many people, contributing to the collapse of birth rates in the West.
That century was extended, in practice, into the 21st century. And we are now at the brink of World War III, with real nuclear threats, man-made pandemics (COVID and more to come), and huge natural cataclysms on the rise. These are truly apocalyptic times, interpreted as the peak of Satan’s dominion, with the surge of the Antichrist at the doorsteps of humanity.
Heaven did not remain silent.
Beginning almost immediately after Leo XIII’s vision, the Blessed Virgin Mary launched the greatest offensive of apparitions and prophetic messages in the entire history of the Church. Before 1884, the 19th century had seen only about 15 Marian apparitions worthy of belief.
After 1884, the number exploded to more than one thousand documented apparitions and locutions – an increase of approximately seventy times the previous annual average.
It makes sense, since our Holy Mother is the one who will crush the head of the serpent (Satan). This is foretold in the first book of the Bible, Genesis 3:15: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; she will crush your head, and you will strike her heel.” And in the last book of the Bible, Revelation 12:1-17 describes the Woman clothed with the sun in combat with the dragon. The very name “Guadalupe” in Nahuatl means “the one who crushes the head of the serpent.” And it is in the main Marian apparition after Leo XIII’s vision, Fatima, that the prophetic response becomes explicit: “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.”
Some examples of this Marian “counter-attack”:
1917 – Fatima (approved 1930)
1932-33 – Beauraing and Banneux (Belgium)
1937 – Heede (Germany)
1947 – Tre Fontane (Rome)
1961-65 – Garabandal (Spain – not condemned)
1973-79 – Akita (Japan – approved by the local bishop)
1980 – Betania (Venezuela – approved by the local bishop)
1981-present – Medjugorje (Ruini Commission: 13 of 15 votes in favor of supernatural origin)
And hundreds of locutionists and visionaries in the 20th and 21st centuries whose messages have received imprimatur or episcopal support.
There are two prophets we particularly follow because we believe in them: Fr. Michel Rodrigue (whom I consider the main apostle of the last times) and Luz de María de Bonilla. I have defended both of them in previous writings (see references).
As we see, this is not a coincidence. And we should take these events seriously: who are we not to listen to the prophecies given by Heaven to us, in order to save us from Satan?
It is the strategic response of the Woman clothed with the sun (Rev 12) to the permission granted to the ancient serpent.
We are, then, in apocalyptic times. But not in the Final Judgment, but in the Judgment of the Nations, which will lead to the millennium of the Era of Peace, after our Holy Mother defeats Satan during the Great Tribulation. According to the Garabandal prophecies, we are very close to it, and the date of the Warning might be early 2026 (ref 1).
A key event to end the dominion of Satan on the world is the Warning (Illumination of Conscience), prophesied in many apparitions, in particular at Garabandal and Betania. This universal experience – where every person over the age of reason will see their soul as God sees it – will precede the Great Tribulation and prepare humanity for the final battle. I wrote an article on God’s plan for apocalyptic times, what to expect, approximate timing and how to prepare (ref 2).
To whom are these messages directed?
Not primarily to the already devout. They are directed, above all, to the great sinners and to a humanity that has forgotten God – exactly as happened in Nineveh (a pagan, cruel city to which God sent Jonah) and in Sodom and Gomorrah (where Abraham interceded for a completely corrupt people).
The devout have no reason to fear apocalyptic warnings; they are calls of mercy so that we may intercede and hasten conversion.
But those of us who know we are sinners (and I place myself first) must pay maximum attention, because these messages are often the last life-line before justice falls.
Discernment is necessary – the case of Mélanie teaches us
Yes, we must always discern (1 Jn 4:1).
The painful experience with Mélanie’s mission has been a hard but precious school: it has shown us how the devil can imitate lights, personal messages, and even apparent miracles to capture souls.
We have made mistakes interpreting the prophecies of the true prophets, and also by listening to false prophets. But not listening out of fear of being deceived would be like Nineveh rejecting Jonah because “there are also false prophets.”
The Virgin does not stop speaking because some messengers are false; she speaks even more to drown out the lie with the fullness of truth.
Conclusion
Pope Leo XIII saw Satan receive a century of extraordinary power.
Mary responded with a century of extraordinary presence.
That presence has not ended – it has intensified.
Let us not be the deaf children of a Mother who is shouting from Heaven to save us.
Let us listen to the true messengers she is sending in this final phase of the battle, with a heart open to conversion, with intelligence to discern, and with the firm decision to obey whatever the Church, in her wisdom, confirms as coming from God.
Because the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart is near – and it will begin with those who dared to believe when the night seemed darkest.
Our Lady of Fatima,
Our Lady of Guadalupe,
Our Lady of Candelaria,
Reconciler of Peoples and Nations,
pray for us.
In Christ and Mary,
Felipe
