I justed needed to know if old coins / notes are exchanged at the "coin exchange" and if we receive a greater value in return, is this money permissable to use?

 

Answer

 

In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh

 

Two currencies of the same country may be sold or exchanged for each other, but both amounts will have to be equal. They cannot be sold at a rate different from their face value.  Any excess on either side would be Riba (interest).^{1 2 3}

 

One exception to the rule is for those notes or coins that have historical or sentimental value. These may be exchanged for a higher amount.^{4 5}

2               قدمنا أن النقود الورقية في حكم الفلوس سواء بسواء، فتجري على مبادلتها أحكام بيع الفلوس بعضها ببعض. فلو بيعت هذه الأوراق على التساوي، بأن تكون قيمة البدلين متساوية، فهذا جائز بالإجماع...وأما بيعها على التفاضل بأن تكون قيمة أحد البدلين أكثر من الآخر، كبيع الربية بالربيتين، والريال بالريالين، والدولار بالدولارين، فتجري فيه أحكام الفلوس بالتفاضل، وفيه خلاف مشهور للفقهاء. وذلك أن بيع الفلس بالفلسين حرام مطلقًا، وهو من الربا المحرم شرعًا عند الإمام مالك بن أنس ، ومحمد بن الحسن الشيباني من الحنفية، وهو أشهر الوجهين عند الحنابلة، وبه يقول الإمام أبو حنيفة وأبو يوسف ، إذا كان البدلان غير متعينين

4        نعم، يمكن أن يتصور قول الشيخين في الفلوس التي يقصد اقتناؤها من حيث موادها وصنعتها، ولا يقصد التبادل بها، كما هو معتاد عند بعض الناس في عصرنا من اقتناء عملات شتى البلاد وشتى الأنواع؛ لتكون ذكرى تاريخية. ففي مثل هذه الفلوس يمكن أن يتصور ما قاله الشيخان رحمهما الله، ويبدو أن في التفاضل في مثل هذه الفلوس سعة على قولهما، وأما الفلوس التي يقصد بها التبادل دون خصوص المادة، فلا ينبغي المساهلة في أمرها، فإنها من أقوى الذرائع إلى الربا، والله سبحانه وتعالى أعلم

The surplus R45 will not be interest as the value of the R5 is not considered. The sentimental value is taken into consideration.
