I can't really tell if this group is mostly about extending the
existing Google Reader, building something new, or both.

If you do end up going the building-something-new route, please be
sure to support PubSubHubbub, especially for feeds of shares whatever
service is hosting.

Both!

Emmanuel is working on Google Reader Share, which puts a Share button back inside Reader via a userscript.

I am working on getting that Share button to share stuff into your feed on sharebro.org, and discover your friends' shares thereupon.

(Though mostly I've been working on the web site, and experimenting with the Reader API, between real life commitments.)

Alex K is working on a Note In Reader-style bookmarklet for his own site, whose name escapes me at the moment. (Gmail is usually my memory for this sort of detail and it's been hella slow since the relaunch.)

pshb is sexy but I'm going to focus on RSS (or Atom or JAS) at first since they're dead simple and already supported by all RSS readers.

Same feeling than Alex.
Yet, a precision: Indeed I'm currently the only one working on the Google Reader Share plugin (contributors expected), and we are ALL discussing a new and open way to share content on the Web. Alex is doing a great work updating the website and is also coding and experimenting on what could be done.
(agree Alex?)

hubbub publub bubblehub whatever the name, has a neat point on pull vs. push and the fact to have only 1 server to push to.
This idea of a single "authority" is at the core of the vision we have. We're still trying to figure out the best way.
So continue to bring in more good stuff like that. even it's not yet what we're looking for, it brings great ideas that can be then discussed.
