“PATHINAARUM PETRU PERU VAAZVU VAAZKA” (Extracts from Johor Bahru Sathya Sai Baba Centre Thursday Satsangs)   When a Sumangali (married woman) prostrates at the feet of the elders, it is customary for her to be bestowed the blessing as “PATHINAARUM PETRU PERU VAAZVU VAAZKA”, the meaning of which may be understood as “May you give birth sixteen times and lead a great life” Who can lead a great, peaceful and happy life if she gives birth to sixteen children?   The confusion became confounded when the Kurukkal, a very learned scholar from Sri Lanka blessed a young man who was the Yajamaana of a Yagna (the one who performs or sponsors the Yagna) was blessed in a similar way. The embarrassed young man did not want to make the ‘Blessing’ public and decided to find the real meaning of the blessing. Not only in Tamil, but in almost all Indian languages, the Mantras often carry meanings which can be interpreted at different levels according to the inquisitiveness, earnestness and level of understanding of the seeker. The word, “Petru” need not always mean “having given birth”. It can also mean “having acquired”. In this light, the Blessing, “PATHINAARUM PETRU PERU VAAZVU VAAZKA” means “Having acquired sixteen (wealths), may you lead a great life”. What are these SIXTEEN WEALTHS? There is a popular poem that lists out these Sixteen Wealths. The authorship of the poem is attributed to Kaalamegap Pulavar.. Thudhi Vaani Viiram Vijayam Santhaanam Thunivu Dhanam Madhi Dhaaniyam Saubaaggyam Bhogam  Arivu Azhagu Pudhidhaam perumai Aram Kulam Novagal pun vayadhu Pathinaaru perum tharuvaay Madhuraip Paraaparaney! Thudhi = fame Vaani = education Viiram = courage Vijayam = success Santhaanam = progeny Thunivu = daring Dhanam = finance Madhidhaanyam = valued grain(abundance of food) Saubaaggyam = well-being Bhogam = enjoyment of pleasures Arivu = wisdom Azhagu = beauty Pudhidhaam perumai = unending honours Aram = philanthropy Kulam = birth Novagal pun vayadhu = healthy long life Bless me with all these sixteen boons, O Supermost of the Supreme, Lord of Madhurai!   However, at Tirunallur, there is an Appar Kovil, where a poem depicting 16 types of wealth was sung by Appar, one of the great poets of Tamil and is dedicated for Goddess Abhiraami. I do not have the poem. But the 16 ‘wealths’ are as follows (nearly the same as above).   1. Good Education 2. Courage 3. Friendship 4. Prosperity 5. Youthfulness 6. Strong Physique 7. Kind Mind 8. Righteous Wife 9. Patience / Perseverance 10. Popularity 11. Truthfulness 12. Charitableness 13. Fund (Finance) 14. Good Management Ability 15. Long and fruitful Life 16.
