I have been emailing with WFDF personnel about having the Spirit Score
sheets, rules, etc in Chinese as our demographic is growing and
partaking in more WFDF events. They claim to lack the personnel, but
would eagerly accept volunteer contributions. If you are interested,
I would love to help move this along. Email me and I can put you in
touch with the right people!

Hi Amy,

It's a high priority of the SOTG committee to get the spirit materials
translated into as many languages as possible, but unfortunately we
only have the resources to get this done by volunteers. So I must
turn your request on its head and instead ask you: have you been able
to get someone to translate these materials? Or would you be able to
contact someone in Shanghai who is fluent in Chinese and English? If
not, I have some friends in Australia (I live in Sydney) who may be
able to help. But I thought I'd check with you first. We'll make
this a priority, as I think it's so exciting how much ultimate is
growing in Asia.

Hi Amy and All,

It's great to hear you've already been developing the SOTG knowledge of junior Ultimate players in China!

I have little experience of Ultimate outside China (a few Hat tournaments in Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand plus 1 Malaysia Open) and just some pick-up games in my home country of Australia, but from what I've seen in China of the past 6 years (since I first started playing Ultimate), "Spirit Awards" often seem to be conflated with the "Party Award". Unfortunately (in some ways), sometimes the Party Award winner has not necessarily been the most Spirited team, in the SOTG sense, on the field.

That said, almost every game I've played in and seen in China has had good to very good, or even great, Spirit, so the basic message must be getting across.


As I see you said, Ultimate really is GROWING fast in China now and it would be great to see SOTG awards become a normal part of bigger tournaments, at least. It would seem to be better to start that happening now while Ultimate is still a relatively small sport with a tight-knit community (although, it's already starting to grow out of this category I think...), rather than try to change the habits of ten times as many people 5 years from now.


I have read a few good articles on UltiWorld on the topic during the last year. There are often good comments in them too!  They do give more of a USAU centred perspective though.

Regarding the specific topic at hand, unfortunately, I don't think my Chinese is anywhere near good enough to be able to help with the translation. But, I hope you get some good people on board!
