Hi,
My machine has a integrated ATI X200 graphic card, after install fedora5 ( text mode ),
I can not start xwindow. The graphic screen stike with mosaic and flashing. I ever try 1280*1024, 1024*768 mode by editing xorg.conf , but in vain.
By google, I found ATI support under linux is not good, can some one give me some solution ?
I guess it is because of the Driver, what i use is the shipped driver of fedora5, do I need to do updating for the driver ?

Does anyone ever try fedora6? Does it work? If it is work under fedora6, I will select to update to 6.

I do not want to buy a new NVIDIA graphic card as recommended by some experts.

Thanks in advance!

Try installing the proprietary ATI drivers
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/5/i386/repodata/repoview/UserInterface.XHardwareSupport.group.html

To add the drivers, first add livna repository to yum using their rpm.
You can configure the repository manually too if you want in
/etc/yum/repos.d, but its easier to let the rpm do it for you. As
root, do

rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm

next install the drivers using yum:

yum install xorg-x11-drv-fglrx

When that is all done you should keep your system up to date with the
latest packages (sometimes this is not good especially updating the
kernel). type:

yum update

hope this helps.

this guy recommends an update, so I'd assume fedora6 would have the
problem fixed:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/linux-laptops/63723-garbled-screen-my-toshiba-satellite-w-ati-x200.html

in general ATI support for linux sucks to put it lightly. The Free
drivers available with Linux distros are generally good enough, but do
not always work with 3D acceleration. So if you want facny graphics
for gaming, I think it's easier to just get an Nvidia card. Otherwise
you should be able to get the simple graphics going.

and to configure X display, in text or X mode, type
system-config-display

make sure you choose the right hardware and resolution.

Hi Denis,
Basically, the guy's problem is totally same as me.
I will try to yum update.
