Tzu Fahrshtehn is the verb, "to understand." Colloquially, is can be used as:
1. "Farshteht?" (Do you understand? or, Get it?)
2. "Farshteh!" (You'd better get it.)
3. "(Ich [not always stated]) farshteh." (I understand, or, I know.)

There was another response to this, but I think it was incorrect. Your zayde
asked whether you understood him. He asked, "Vershtayst"? This means
"Understand"? Which is short for "du vershtayst"? ... "do you understand"?
The other responder had "vershtayt" which is the third person singular. It's
not likely your zayde spoke to you in the third person singular, unless he was
a meshugginer zayde.
