YIDDISH IN ALSACE
Der Lufteater or Théātre en l'Air of Alsace, is organising
an intensive 3-week course in Yiddish, from the 13th - 31st of July 1998,
in Strasbourg, France.
For 3 weeks, participants will be able to study the Yiddish language
intensively
and also take part in a variety of cultural et artistic activities around
the Yiddish theme.
Yiddish Language Lessons (mornings) :
- level 1 by Sonia Dratwa Pinkusowich
- level 2 by Gilles Rozier
- level 3 by Schmuel Bunim
- level 4 by Bernard Waisbrot
Artistic and Cultural Workshops (afternoons) :
- Theatre: Rafaėl Goldwaser
(based around the tales of Isaac Bashevis Singer)
- Yiddish Songs: Astrid Ruff
(individual interpretation)
- Ashkenaze Cuisine: Madame Wygoda
(author of a well-known book of recipes)
- Mairev Yiddish: Astrid Starck
(a workshop on western European Yiddish or Judeo-Alsacian)
Conferences (evenings) :
- Alt-Yiddish or old Yiddish by Simon Neuberg
(conference given in Yiddish with translation into French)
- Peretz Markish, Soviet Poet by Jean-Marie Duchemin
(conference given in Yiddish with translation into French)
- Alsacian Judaism
- The links between eastern and western Yiddish by Astrid Starck
Discovering Alsace :
a walking tour of historical Jewish Strasbourg,
an introduction to the rural heritage of Judeo-Alsacian culture
(synagogues, cemeteries, Jewish museums ...),
a visit of Strasbourg by boat,
walking excursions in the beautiful Vosges mountains nearby ...
Cultural Events:
- S'brent : a Yiddish play,
(3 monologues by Sholem Aleikhem played by Rafaėl Goldwaser).
- A concert performance of Yiddish songs
- showings of Yiddish films (sub-titled in English).
The lessons and workshops will take place in the agreeable et spacious
atmosphere of the ORT School of Strasbourg which provides full board with
kosher meals, teaching and performance facilities, and languages
laboratories ...
The number of participants is limited !
Course Fees:
Standard Fee : 3000 French Francs.
Student Fee: 2500 French Francs.
This price covers travelling expenses for the excursions,
free entry to the conferences and concerts, etc ...
Full Board and Lodging at the ORT School : 4000 French Francs.
(rooms with 1 or 2 beds)
Hotel accommodation is also available on demand.
We are going to do all we can for these three weeks to be a real iddish
