Just so you should know that there was at least one, albeit small, =
orthodox group that though they don't agree with egal davenning....they =

Mezuzot get used as amulets too, so I'm not sure what difference it makes. The
Shulchan Aruch says it's okay to wear an amulet on Shabbat provided it is one
which is reputed to be effective. I extrapolate from that that it's also okay
to wear a campaign button if the candidate is in the lead ;-) Besides, you
can't make an amulet without breaking eggs.

As many of you noticed, the Bridges list (all of Shamahs lists, I
think) were down last week for a few days. I just noticed that I
didn't receive Digest 640, and there may have been some posts that were
sent out individually that weren't in Digest 639 or Digest 641. I
don't have access to ftp or archived files, though I personally keep an
archive of all Bridges Digests. If any of you received or can retrieve
Digest 640, please forward it to me.
If you sent a post between Tues. and Thurs of last week and you didn't
see it posted, you can assume it got lost in the crash. But if someone
finds Digest 640, I will forward it to the list.

Just a small nitpick, I believe Pied-Noir (literally, black foot) refers to
all European-descent (read: white) peoples born in North Africa, not just Jews.

Some of the worst ritual abuse is actually in Fundamentalist homes.
However, just because you haven't seen ritual abuse doesn't mean it doesn't
exist. I know many people who were abused in Satanic cults and
Fundamentalist Christian groups. I have seen the evidence in the form of
their suffering.

Verry interesting ... this is the handshape for one of the American
Sign Language signs for "curse". Furthermore, this particular
handshape is not used in many other signs (the only ones that come to
my mind at the moment are the signs for "snob," "whisky/alcohol",
"tent", and "sarcastic/ironic").

Sara, I'm pretty sure that "Pied-Noir" doesn't mean "Black Jew."
"Pied-Noir" (literally, "black-foot") is a term that refers to French
white people who grew up in colonized parts of North Africa. The term
has always felt racist to me. But I'm sure that others on the list
know more about French Algeria than I.

It seems to me that there is a big difference between moral responsibility
and possible causal factors. Clearly what happened to Laura (me and every
other woman I know) is the moral responsibility of the guys who harassed
and bothered her. But it is possible that Laura's lesbianism was a causal
factor (not that I'm saying she's to blame or should change her behavior
or anything). Just as my gender is a very strong factor in whether I am
selected as a target for harassment, so might my sexuality be a factor for
certain types of abusive people. That's what distinguishes hate crimes
from other types of crimes. As an aside, in my mind rape should almost
always be classed as a hate crime against women.

Sorry I have not responded to your posting earlier. I thought I had signed
off of the list, temporarily, while I was away. Apparently I had not done so
successfully and came back to over 300 postings! I am not sorry though I did
not get signed off, although I was disappointed by some postings -
disappointed that egalitarian minyans are continuing to be attacked in such
vicious and disrespectful ways, disappointed that gays, lesbians and those
that support them on the list and in other ways, are required - once again -
to be on the defensive.
I noticed, however, that you are planning to be at the WSN (UK) conference in
Mid-Glamorgan, Wales. I will be too. Perhaps we could arrange to meet?

Aviva Cantor's book Jewish Women/Jewish Men: The Legacy of Patriachy in
Jewish Life (N.Y., Harper Collins, 199) is reviewed by Paula Hyman, Lucy
Moses Professor of Modern Jewish History at Yale, in Lillith, Spring 1996,
Vol. 21, No. 1. I think it is fair to say that Hyman respects Cantor's
project, but does not find the book free of problems.
Also, in response to Seth's (much earlier) posting about yeshiva study, take
a look at Vanessa Och's book Words on Fire: One Woman's Journey into the
Sacred (Harcourt, Brace, Janovich 1990). While her central question - is
the Torah open to women? - might not be the same as yours, she gives a moving
narrative about her journey to study and along the way comments on some of
the more commonly known places to study.

It's obvious that something happened in the McMartin case, but I think
it's very difficult to figure out what. I had about half a dozen
McMartin kids in Sunday school class (none who testified one way or the
other). One was a Persian emigre. She said to me, "Those people were the
nicest people in the world. They taught me English and were so patient.
I was so upset and betrayed to find out later all the bad things they
were doing to other kids." I didn't say anything to her (she had made
her belief choice and this was too loaded for me to go poking in), but I
was distressed by her statement.
However, what I said about McMartin is that I don't believe kids were put
on school busses and taken to dig up bodies in cemetaries as part of the
daily activities. I stand behind this statement.

Though an argument ex silencio (from silence) is not impossible, what
then constitutes evidence? I have a Catholic friend whose mother
absolutely believes the blood libel against the Jews. When confronted
with the fact that I am a Jew, she just tells me it's those other Jews
and that I'm ignorant. What do you make of dozens of allegations of
blood libel, many resulting in convictions? I am quite sure that many of
the accusers acted in good faith with full belief in their cause. But the
fact is that Jews don't kill little Christian children to make matzah.
How do you reconcile the true belief of the accuser with the innocence of
the accused? If one is always to believe the accuser, how can the
falsely accused ever have justice?

Suppose that, (insert "God forbid" into this sentence every sentence
in the next two paragraphs), I were a pedophile, and I were abusing
someone over an extended period of time.
One of my big priorities, of course, would be to prevent my victim
from telling the Authorities. How could I, being a clever sociopath,
prevent this?
The obvious way would be for me to convince my victim that the
Authorities were on my side. I could *say* that every other person
the victim trusts was part of my Satanic coven. I could make up lurid
stories about all the things we do together. I could make claims that
Mrs. X is on his way to a coven meeting, or that the ring on Mr. Y's
finger is a sign of membership in the coven, in such a way that they
seemed credible to my victim and that the victim could not disprove
them.
This would take a bit of work, but (a) on a larger scale, the Big Lie
has proven to be a very effective tool for manipulating people, (b)
children don't have as many resources (intellectual, financial, etc.)
as adults and therefore have a harder time doing the legwork, or
noticing relevant information, that would discredit tall tales, and
(c) pedophiles usually don't just pull random kids off the street, but
take advantage of people who trust them.
Perhaps this is part of an explanation for the Satanic-ritual-abuse
allegations?
