Hi All,
I did send this to Jason, but I have to disown the part of the news story where it says "...the quartos are the closest we can get to what Shakespeare really wanted...". There may be a smidgen of evidence for that in one or two cases, but for most volumes this argument is incorrect. The quartos (and octavos, for those keeping track) were printed without Shakespeare's cooperation or consent.
The Folio, of course, was published by his friends 7 years after he died, so Will had no personal involvement in printing that one, either.
Every word we have of every Shakespeare play has already been through the hands of editors and compositors. We don't know "what Shakespeare really wanted."
In contrast, he wrote his poems for publication, and was involved with the printers, so for those, we have much greater confidence that what we read is what Shakespeare intended.
Just trying to keep everything in perspective.
Regards, Jerry
