What do you all think about this going online? It might be something
the group uses for upcoming readings. Or maybe not.

I think it's great that it's going to be online and accessible for everyone. We can compare texts and see which version of lines you want to use for performance.

Hi All,

I did send this to Jason, but I have to disown the part of the news story where it says "...the quartos are the closest we can get to what Shakespeare really wanted...". There may be a smidgen of evidence for that in one or two cases, but for most volumes this argument is incorrect. The quartos (and octavos, for those keeping track) were printed without Shakespeare's cooperation or consent.

The Folio, of course, was published by his friends 7 years after he died, so Will had no personal involvement in printing that one, either.

Every word we have of every Shakespeare play has already been through the hands of editors and compositors. We don't know "what Shakespeare really wanted."

In contrast, he wrote his poems for publication, and was involved with the printers, so for those, we have much greater confidence that what we read is what Shakespeare intended.

Just trying to keep everything in perspective.

Regards, Jerry

Hi Jerry,
Having performed and studied and studied and studied and analyized first folio text compared to the more widely published editions of Shakespeare, I find that the quarto and first folio are only helpful if the director is a true scholar of the text and can help the actor breakdown the characters' meaning when using iambs and enjambled lines and double consonants and all that other scholarly stuff I've learned and to  pull in the history the text is created around.
Otherwise, the quarto is confusing to the actor unless the actor is too, a scholar of Shakespeare's work.

It's very cool.  It'll be great to just go online to see these (just about) original texts...

Jason,

thanks so much for all the updates!
I'm excited to make it to a show and audition soon...I've been busy going out of town for acting gigs at small, non-eq theatres.

That's amazing about the plays being published online!  What an amazing resource...I'll be interested to compare texts side by side!

I've also been planning a project of my own...wanted to hear your thoughts on it:  I'm thinking of getting some people together to do readings for recording and turn it into a podcast...maybe try to hit up some people for advertising (I've spoken a bit with the No Fear people)...

It seems like this could be something a lot of your people would be interested in...

I hear about ShakesSat from a lot lately...looking forward to meeting you!
