Sikh Siyasat

Ludhiana, Punjab (May 28, 2012): Whereas, many circles of Sikh diaspora and Badal Dal leaders are busy in hailing the “success” in getting Anand Marriage Act, 1909 amended in the Indian Parliament, Sikh academicians and scholars have taken strong exception to the generalized view in this matter and have termed the recent amendment as a “fraud” with the Sikhs.

In a talk show organized by the “Sikh Siyasat” on May 27, 2012 Dr. Daljit Singh (LLB., LL.M, Ph. D), Principal of Khalsa College Amritsar, said marriage registration alone was never the demand of Sikhs rather Sikhs were continuously demanding comprehensive personal law.

Prof. Jagmohan Singh was of the view that Indian Parliament has played a fraud with the Sikhs and misguided & selfish sections among Sikhs are celebrating this fraud.

Many serious implications of the amendment were highlighted by Dr. Daljit Singh and Sirdar Gurtej Singh IAS. S. Parmjeet Singh Gazi, President of Sikh Students Federation, also participated in this talk show.

Recording of this talk show on “Anand Marriage Act, Sikh Personal Law and Sikh Identity” can be viewed here:

Bitterly true indeed!

Please do post these valuable comments on the original source of the article too. Don't know how will that help but this pain should reach others too.

Separate identity will not be recognized by piece of paper, but by the awakening of the Sikh nation. When your elders will not ask you if keeping a kirpan in your gatra and not in a necklace is really necessary. When each Sikh will see himself beyond uncut hair and turban and as a Man of God. When we don't have to tell people again and again Rakhi, Diwali, Holi are not Sikh festivals!

Before we fight for Sikh causes, we should see how many Sikhs are actually together for that cause.

To be honest it is very small victory for the long pending demand. But are these the things Sikh nation wants right now? More importantly, Badal and co are ignoring the rampant drug problem in Punjab. 75% of the youth affected by drug addiction, it is such an in your face number. They are 'thinking' of reducing liquor stores but the drug problem is not even on govt agenda. The widows of 1984 and other shaheeds are not getting justice or any support from the sikh nation. They are just letting the land of erstwhile heroes rot away. There are no big foreign investments either. No concrete economic development taking place. Even agricultural production is on a decline and being shifted to other states. No premier institues are opening up in Punjab (there are a few exceptions) and forgetting all this, we wish to fight to have our name registered as a separate identity in the constitution.
