Hi,

I would like to try a few experiments over the next few years in the interests of growing our sport. Some of the experiments may seem radical or may be incompatible with how things are currently done and so I thought the best approach is to test them independent of any club or organization until they show promise. The below covers my first experiment.

I’ve been involved in soaring in a few countries and some of the best prepared and most frequently occurring cross country lectures were in a structure where highly experienced cross country pilots were strongly incentivized to produce high quality lectures. I only experienced this learning opportunity after many years in soaring and I think it could have saved me a lot of time in the earlier years.

I'd like to see if there is interest in a paid workshop where a small group attends several cross country lectures and training that is customized to their needs. Self-study is of course still a viable alternative and free lectures also exist on occasion, but I expect this workshop will appeal to people who find the time saving to be of high value or prefer instructor-led learning to self-study.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Intriguing idea, Johathan. A few thoughts from me.

For several decades Evergreen has proposed programs to encourage cross-country progression, but as you surmise, the energy quickly fades, possibly due to lack of incentives for the organizers.

The price you suggest is reasonable, particularly for someone participating in this sport. For me, good use of my time is more significant than the money.

I would expect a comfortable venue that encouraged learning. Is a big digital screen available? Would you use the Evergreen clubhouse?

Is this initial workshop targeted at beginners, experienced cross-country pilots that want to get to the next level, both of these?

Also, I would value having all the materials and significant references available weeks in advance so I could become familiar with the content.

All in all, thank you very much for considering this. Based on the lectures at the beginning of the Methow flying days, you have a lot to offer to the soaring community, and this could be a good value. Congratulations on the SGC long-flight awards and thanks for creating the video shown at the SGC banquet.

Hi Marty,

Thank you for the comments and questions. The workshop isn't targeted at any level, the group is small and so I can cater for different experience levels. For the materials, my thinking is that the workshop will mainly appeal to people who find the time saving to be of high value or prefer instructor-led learning to self-study, and so trying to avoid pre-work, but will give it some thought. I'm working on the venue, but share your sentiments.

Thanks,
Jonathan
