Just found out that Hannah was born on Easter Monday.

I can just picture the scene - the local classically trained priest or minister suggesting that Mary should call her child (born on the day that Christ was resurrected) Anastasia which means 'resurrection'.

A pleased parishioner wanders off thinking that will do nicely or goes in to register the birth two weeks later and tells the registrar that the vicar says to call her 'Anna Stacia'.

It occurs to me that
Annies mother could not read or write.  So what if her daughter was meant to be called Anastasia? and when her mother was asked she said slowly Ana - stacia.  If the registrar was hard of hearing or whatever, he may have assumed "Hannah Stacia" and/or Annie grew up thinking it was two separate names.  She is not called Hannah anywhere else I have seen.

Does that make any sense?

Hannah Stacia Lawrence born 7/4/43 daughter of James Lawrence bricklayer and Mary Ann nee Jessop (illiterate).  Address "Epping Forest" In a caravan perhaps?

Eliza Rosina Wheeler born 18/9/78 daughter of Thomas Wheeler and Annie Statia nee Lawrence at 4 Queen Street Camberwell.

Thanks again Renia and others for the help in breaking down this wall.

I am betting on Alicia but who knows.

I have ordered the certificate so will inform the group when I get it next week.
I have just heard from Croydon that the Addison Road in 1881 is the same street in the A to Z now.  So my relly lived less than a mile from the carpenter from Epping who I suspect to have been her brother.

My Gt Grandmother was christened Susannah but was known as Annie.

So there is another variation around the name Ann.

Could  Slacia  have originally  been Alicia

Seems reasonable. It's a story all by itself.
