I have been thinking about setting up a NNR(Natural Nitrate Reduction) or
Jaubert system filtered tank.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thank you.

hi!
I'm don't know much about marine/invertebrates saltwater aquarium keeping
but I hv read about this setup from a book. You can get this book from any
of the local branch library. Besides named Jaubert system it was also called
"Monaco Style" marine aquarium. It made used of a special bottom platform
that uplift about 1- 2 inches from the base (one that looks liked an UGF
plate with those air tubes attached). Live rocks were used in this setup as
a denitrifying purposes along the this special bottom platform inplaced.
Also layers of aragonite sand, coral pebbles, shell fragments or similar
materials of reef origin is added. Someone from this newsgroup migh have
details understanding of this setting and hopefully they read your posting
and can provide you with a better reply. That's what I can help, bye!
Regards, Desmond

Hi Tan

I am using a modified Jaubert system...it's NNR but without the plenum and
screen.

The key to success of such a system...is 'patience....lots of it'.....go
very slowly with the stocking
levels of both invertebrates, and minimal fishes. In my NNR system....I have
a 3-4" sandbed....try
and get sugar sized aragonite sand...mostly less than 1mm in size. Also,
you want to 'throw' out
your wet/dry filtration and bio-balls....and trust the live-rocks/live-sand
to do all the niftrification and
de-nitrification for you. My sump is basically empty....just a water
container to hold the skimmer,
temp probes, calcium reactor, and some floss for mechanical trapping of dirt
from incoming
water of overflow.

It's very difficult to find live-sand in Singapore....so when you cure your
live-rocks, you would want to maintain as much critter life as
possible...brittle-stars, sand-stars,
bristle worms...etc. They will help to colonize your sand bed....and feed
off detritus that will accumulate
there. You would also want to maintain a good protein skimmer...to remove
organics....

To-date, the water parameters have been pretty stable...I do not yet achieve
0 nitrate levels...but
it's hoovering between 20-50 ppm....with infrequent water changes....ie 10%
every 3 months or so.
So far...it does not seem to be bothering most of the corals that I
have....acroporas, bubble, hammers,
brains, mushrooms, palythoa, and brown button polyps....and even my acropora
frags are doing well...
I have 8 frags of the mother colony that has grown about 2" since the
beginning of the year.

Besides the above...the usual water parameters apply...ie temp, salinity,
alk, PH, NH4, NO2, PO4
and Ca...etc.

rgds,
Roy

process?

This is something new, please tell me more about using clams as nitrate
remover. I'm using currently having nitrate reading >50.
