Ever wonder where your fruit comes from? Experience the unique opportunity to hand pick it yourself. SingaporeConnect is organising a cherry/berry picking trip to the cherry capital of the Bay Area - Brentwood, where you and your friends and families can pick the freshest cherries you can find, and have fun doing it. This is a not to be missed experience for Singaporeans who may have grown up in a concrete jungle, or those currently living in the Bay Area for a short while. The annual cherry picking season does not last long!

Brentwood is located in the inland area of the East Bay, which still has a concentration of farms. If you are coming in from the south via the scenic Vasco Road, you will go through the Altamont Pass where one of largest wind mill farms in the country is located.

When we are done picking, we will have a dimsum lunch at the East Bay and share our cherry tales, or play Fruit Ninja...

Date and Time:
June 16, 2012, Saturday, 9am -11am-ish.
Location:

Brentwood, CA. Exact farm to be determined sooner to the date depending on conditions.
Meeting place:

At the car park of the farm. Note that for some farms, “car park” means the side of the road. Later comers can proceed directly into the farm. Car pooling is highly recommended.
Cost:
Free. You pay for your own pick, gas and lunch. Cherries is about $2.50/pound.
Things to bring:

Sunscreens, cameras, hats, water. Farms usually provide plastic bags for your pick, but you may want to bring your own bags or containers.
Directions:

From South bay, take 680-N, then 580-E, exit at Vasco road after Livermore. Travel on Vasco road for about 15-20 minutes until you reach Walnut Blvd.

From Peninsula, take San Mateo bridge, and 880-N, I-238, and 580-E. and follow direction above.

Unless you live near Walnut Creek or Concord, taking Highway 4 is not recommended as it usually has pretty bad traffic.

Note. it will take about 1 hour or so travel from the South Bay to Brentwood. Saturday morning traffic is usually good on 680/580/Vasco.
Lunch:

We will eat somewhere on the way back from the farm, near the junction of 580/680. Please vote on your choice of restaurants:

1) Dim Sum at Willow Tree Restaurant.
6512 Regional St (at Dublin Blvd)
Dublin, CA 94568.

The dimsum is presentable and OK though not the best in the region. The great thing is that it has ample parking and usually there is no line and can accommodate a large group.

From 580-E, right after junction of 680, exit at San Ramon Rd on the right. Turn at Dublin Blvd, and turn right again at Regional.

2) Ulferts Center.
4288 Dublin Blvd, Dublin.

There are a number of good restaurants here. Koi Garden is pretty good for dimsum, but at 12-ish, it will be too crowded, so we will give it a miss. Other smaller restaurants are much less crowded but we may have to split.

From 580-E, exit at Tassajara Rd, turn left on Dublin Blvd. Ulferts Center is on your left. U-turn.

3) Sweet Tomatoes
What better way to complete the farmer experience with more fresh greens at this wholesome salad and soup buffet place.
After lunch activities

1. Shopping at near-by Stoneridge Mall.

2. If people are into it, there is a steam train ride on Sunol to Fremont
Misc.

1. General information on Brentwood farms: http://www.harvest4you.com

2. You may want to download and print a copy of the trial map: http://www.harvest4you.com/images/stories/HT2012_dloadmap-3.pdf

3. Usually you can “sample” the fruit while in the farm. But please do not pick green fruits, and remember, you must pay for what you pick.

We will meet at:

Nunn Better Farms
830 Sunset Rd

BrentwoodCA 94513

Please bring sunglasses, sunscreen, plenty of water and hats since it is going to be hot this Saturday.

As befits a "farmer", dress comfortably and suitably for the outdoors, i.e. be prepared to get a little dirty and to climb ladders.

Be early! We can head out as soon as folks are all present, at 9.00 am sharp, and get going before it gets too hot and head out for an early dim sum lunch (that was the winner of the vote).

Date: Saturday, June 16, 2012 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (PT)

Location:
Brentwood, CA
