A little more information about Maya Dance Theatre and the performance :
MAYA DANCE THEATRE, based in Singapore, was established in late 2006 by a group of artists dedicated to the creation of contemporary Asian dance. Maya DT’s participation in the Festival is part of an exchange program with ODC/Dance, and this summer marks the company’s North American debut. Members of ODC/Dance along with choreographer KT Nelson travelled to Singapore for a series of workshops and two performances in May this year. In turn, Maya DT is in San Francisco now to collaborate with ODC/Dance in a work by Singaporean choreographer Kavitha Krishnan. For WDDF-SF Maya DT will also join members of ODC/Dance in a performance of ODC Artistic Director and Founder Brenda Way’sUnintended Consequences: A Meditation (2008), set to music by renowned performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson. This piece, originally commissioned by San Francisco’s Equal Justice Society, explores the emotional and political costs of complacency within an egalitarian community.
