Dear Members,

Some of us are receiving this OSU (Overseas Singaporean Unit) newsletter every now and then. The OSU editors have made an observation that there may be many more of you, whom they loosely refer to as OS's (Overseas Singaporeans), who aren't aware that they could sign up to receive the newsletter to their email box. You can get this by registering with OSU at their web site: Overseas Singaporean portal.

The May issue of OS TouchPoint (as appended below) is of significance as it touches upon Singapore Day NY 2012, which was recently held in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY. Being relatively close by (compared to last year's, which was in Shanghai), a number of your fellow members travelled to NYC to take part in the activities (and, get free food). SingaporeConnect was one of the four OSC's (Overseas Singaporean Clubs) in the US present at a short meeting with the guest-of-honour, DPM Teo, and his entourage. (If you have some notes, photos, or movies to contribute, there's a link below to send it to their OS TouchPoint team).

According to the OSU, the goal of this newsletter, the OS TouchPoint, is to keep overseas Singaporeans updated with important information from home, upcoming events by OSU, as well as lifestyle and personality features.

This month’s edition includes information about:

·         The upcoming Distinguished Business Leaders (DBL) Series in Hong Kong featuring Mr Lee Hsien Yang, Chairman, F&N Ltd

·         A new Member Dashboard feature on the OS Portal

·         An interview with jazz composer and musician, Jeremy Monteiro

Note, this is a one-time forward of the newsletter for your consideration. We will not be forwarding other issues, so please evaluate and sign-up for your own "copy" if you wish.

Dear friend abroad,

I write this letter somewhat on a high, with the buzz of Singapore Day 2012 still ringing in my head weeks after. The fifth edition of Singapore Day was a tremendous success! And if you were there, thanks for making it so!

Thousands of Singaporeans came together in New York on a perfect Spring day in the park, basking in the familiarity of all things Singaporean – an overwhelming experience that warmed the heart just as laksa warmed the belly. To those who continue to disprove the existence of the Singapore Spirit, it is alive and kicking as we saw it as Singapore Day 2012! We note the encouraging feedback many of you have left us on Facebook and it’s awesome you enjoyed yourselves immensely. But let it not be a day that’s a be-all-and-end-all. Just as a relationship with a significant person in your life needs cultivating, it takes more than a letter (or a one-day event) to maintain close ties with home. And the Overseas Singaporean Unit hopes you’ll allow us to be that bridge that connects you to home wherever you live for this season. If you have post-SG Day reflections of the day you’d like to share with kindred spirits, we’re happy to publish your story online. It is a massive effort (cost, manpower, expertise, sweat and tears) to stage Singapore Day and we want to hear if the event was worthwhile. Read on to learn how you can send us your story. Meantime, check out the photos of the day.

If Singapore Day was beyond reach for you, our DBL and SG Buzz seasons begin this month, with the kickoff in Hong Kong on 17 May. We hope to see you at one of these upcoming events if it will be happening in your city of residence.

For overseas Singaporean clubs, societies and student associations that wish to organise events that will bring the Singaporean community together in your area, why not take advantage of the funding programmes available to you? Familiarise yourself with the funding programmes today.

OSU most recently co-hosted the President’s dinner reception with Singaporeans living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of the attendees, among them, the country manager of an international logistics company, a general director of our local bank, a financial controller of a prestigious hotel and the COO of a business school. Wherever you are and whatever your calling, fly the flag high.

If you’d like to get in touch with us with a query, feedback or a suggestion on how OSU can more effectively be your bridge to all that’s happening back home, email us.

Over-and-out, but never disconnected,
