The SPOP Award was established in
memory of Sheila Ann Gilmartin, who
died of brain cancer much too young.
Sheila played underwater hockey for
more than 10 years—serving as the core
for Hawaii, developing a new team in
Pennsylvania, competing in numerous
tournaments and two world
championships, and coaching. More
importantly, Sheila loved the game.
She demonstrated commitment,
leadership, team spirit and enjoyment
in women’s underwater hockey. It is
in recognition of these ideals that
the SPOP Award was created. Even when
she was fighting this horrible
disease, she was upbeat and smiling.
She was a happy, energetic, positive
human being who enjoyed life and
always seemed to have a positive
attitude.
The SPOP award has been presented at
Nationals to deserving women of USA
underwater hockey since 1999.
The SPOP will be awarded to any woman
in the underwater hockey community,
either playing or serving in any
capacity, as recognition of
outstanding dedication, who performs
above and beyond to the benefit of
advancing the role of women in the
sport.
We are asking the USA hockey
community for nominations of
exceptional women of USA Underwater
Hockey. If you would like to
