Social Worker – Unaccompanied Immigrant Children

San Francisco, CA | Full‑Time

The Immigration Center for Women and Children (ICWC) seeks a full‑time Social Worker to join its interdisciplinary legal team in its San Francisco (Mid‑Market) office. This position is ideal for MSW students graduating in May and/or recent MSW graduates interested in trauma‑informed, holistic advocacy with immigrant children and youth.

ICWC is a nonprofit legal organization providing immigration services to underrepresented immigrants in California and Nevada. ICWC works to promote security and stability for children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected, and for immigrants who are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes. Our work focuses on federal immigration laws that allow marginalized immigrants to apply for work authorization and permanent residency.

Position Overview

The Social Worker will provide direct support to unaccompanied immigrant children who fled abuse in their home countries and were released from federal Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) custody. Working closely with attorneys and legal staff, the Social Worker will help deliver holistic, trauma‑informed, and healing‑centered services that support each client’s physical, mental, and emotional well‑being while their immigration case is pending.

This role offers meaningful clinical and advocacy experience at the intersection of social work, immigration law, and child welfare, with training in trauma‑informed and interdisciplinary practice.

Salary: $70,000–$82,000, depending on experience and education.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct strengths‑based and needs assessments addressing safety, stability, physical and mental health, emotional well‑being, housing, and education
  • Provide ongoing socio‑emotional support to youth navigating complex legal processes
  • Draft client declarations and support youth in sharing their stories in ways that promote healing and strengthen their legal cases
  • Connect clients to community‑based services and resources
  • Maintain accurate and timely case documentation
  • Collaborate closely with attorneys and legal staff regarding client well‑being and case strategy
  • Obtain medical, mental health, educational, and/or criminal records relevant to legal cases
  • Draft letters of support for court filings and legal submissions
  • Share trauma‑informed and healing‑centered principles with ICWC staff
  • Participate as an engaged member of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team

Qualifications à

Required

  • MSW (or completion by May)
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Commitment to cultural humility and trauma‑informed, healing‑centered practice

Preferred

  • Knowledge of the immigration system and/or systems impacting children (education, dependency/child welfare, juvenile justice)
  • Experience working with Latinx communities and/or child survivors of trauma
  • Familiarity with community‑based youth and family resources
  • Demonstrated interest in immigrants’ rights, civil liberties, or social justice advocacy
  • Ability to take initiative and contribute new ideas within a team setting

Work Environment
