Hello everyone!

Thank you for your interest in the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center Full time-limited term Unlicensed Social Work Training Program. We are offering two positions for a two-year commitment with the potential to be hired as permanent staff if there are current openings at the end of training. Associate Social Workers (ASWs) will gain exposure to a variety of patients who present with the full spectrum of mental health diagnosis, and clinical acuity. The training program will be split into four six-month tracks: Pre-release planning track, low acuity track, moderate acuity track, general population mental health outreach track.

ASWs will receive one hour of individual supervision by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), two hours of group supervision by a LCSW, weekly didactic, join in our weekly case-conference with psychology interns and practicum students, in addition to assigned clinical responsibilities.

Agency Specialty Areas: While not necessarily specialty areas, the agency treats patients with diagnoses of anxiety disorders, mood disorders, PTSD/Trauma, serious mental disorders, and substance use disorders, and brief assessments such as suicide risk assessments and initial patient intake assessments.

Patients are primarily from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and the population is considered underserved. African American and Latino inmates make up a considerable portion of the population. The populations also consist of Caucasian, Asian, and Native American. Monolingual Spanish speakers are often housed at San Quentin and practicum students who are fluent in Spanish successfully work with this population.

Supervision and Training: The San Quentin Mental Health clinical supervisors are committed to providing high quality training through experiential and didactic methods, as well as through supervision. Intensive supervision is an integral component of the program and is designed to foster ethical responsibility, personal integrity, diversity awareness, and self-awareness. Training focuses on achieving fundamental competencies in the provision of mental health services. Our goal is to train ASWs as generalist mental health practitioners who will be able to transfer obtained skills to a variety of clinical settings. Trainees are given the opportunity to assume increasing professional responsibility as their skill and knowledge continue to mature. San Quentin offers Cognitive Behavioral, Community/Multicultural, Psychodynamic, and Interdisciplinary/Integrated Care, supervision. Moreover, the theoretical orientation of our primary supervisors are psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, attachment, and existential. However each supervisor utilizes an integration of orientations and caters supervision to the needs and interests of each supervisee.
