Before you start migrating the search I think we need to look at the
options. The search plugin we have today will not work for 1.4 and have
been a bit buggy for 1.2.

http://www.symfony-project.org/plugins/rsLucenePlugin is available for
Propel (not tested) and sf1.4, but what are the options for Doctrine?
Should we use our own simple search?

Yes, that was in my mind. I have not used myself, any drawbacks or
reasons why not?
