  • Antioch Bridge
  • The Antioch Bridge crosses the San Joaquin River linking Antioch, California with Sacramento County, California, United States. The bridge is signed as part of State Route 160. Wikipedia

The short answer is, yes.
The longer answer is, do you want to? The roads leading to and from the bridge are often on the less desirable side, and can be downright dangerous in places. Probably best to post your proposed route to get feedback from local cyclists.

According to the Bay Area Toll Authority you can. See

The Antioch Bridge is one of four (the others being the Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez and Dumbarton bridges) state-owned toll bridges that currently have bicycle and pedestrian access.

I haven't tried it, but google street view show bicycles and peds are permitted:

Thanks John, and Roland!

Sure why not ride the bridge when I have my Grapevine to Davis Quad 24 hour TT in the Quest in mind?

Want to join me??  :)

I've done the Antioch Bridge twice, and don't plan to again unless I have a good reason. The "bike" path is a glorified shoulder right next to highway speed traffic, on an incline, so not a very pleasant experience. There are some interesting towns to stop in along River Rd to the north side of the bridge, but the road itself is not very fun and often involves a consistent headwind heading towards Sacramento.

Speaking of bridges, there was an interesting comment made by a Caltrans director while receiving an award at EBBC's Biketopia event last Friday. He pledged that they would not only "make happen" the completion of the Bay Bridge bike path to San Francisco, but also make bike access possible on the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge. There's still lots of unanswered questions, but it was very promising to hear it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Bike from SF to the North Bay to the East Bay and back? Lots of potential brevet routes, there...

We did the Antioch bridge on the Fleche. It's not particularly long. Pretty strong cross winds, especially on the descent. I would recommend getting off 160 and diverting around Sherman Island Rd which is pretty nice. FWIW, I think the Rio Vista bridge was worse, but Montezuma Rd was nice.

I've ridden over the bridge (here's my blog post with photos on the bridge!), but yeah, can be super windy -- especially if a big truck blasts past you on the descent! But I love the riding on the other side and would do it again.

And Robert - great news about the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge; can't wait for that to happen!

Cheers,

Jenny
