PBP chat for first timers: update |
|
|
This event has broadened to be pitched to all of RUSA, and we will have speakers from across the country presenting. The format will almost certainly be an online presentation. Ahead of the date (still being decided but likely still in October) a form will be published asking for first time PBP hopefuls to submit their most burning PBP related questions. |
SFR is opening up a new Walz cotton cap order. To be included in the order, please fill out the form here. Payment is up front. The first cap price is $25 which will cover shipping. Subsequent caps are $22. If the total order exceeds 150 caps we can lower the cost by $4. As in the past, you can customize the color choices of your cap using one of the 18 color choices on the chart included in the form. The order will close on Oct. 2nd and turnaround time is expected to be between 4 to 6 weeks.
Also, water bottles have been ordered and a delivery date is early October. You can then purchase these when we update the SFR gear order form. |
For the first time in many years, the July and August (AKA Faugust) calendars were pretty quiet. For many of those past years, the Adventure Series was held in June, July and August. For 2025 the calendar for that set of events was moved up, and compressed a bit and concluded in late June. With the Double Brevet Weekend event still on hiatus until 2026, that left only the return of the Nighttime 200km for July. The Dual Populare event was moved into September for this year and with the only August event happening on nearly the last day of the month there was nearly six weeks of quiet on the calendar.
Here it is September now, and SFR's calendar is heating back up. On the 14th of the month, we will have that aforementioned Dual Populaire. For those new to us, this is the event were SFR runs two concurrent populaire length (~100km) rides and hosts a post ride picnic at East Beach. Later in September (27th) SFR will also host the DART (200k) and the DART Populaire (120k) events. The finish location will again be Gilman Brewing on Gilman in Berkeley (very near BART and Amtrak). The team event registration form is here.
Not on the calendar until very recently will be the return of the mid-week 200kms. On Wednesday, Sept. 10th, SFR will host the Russian River 200km. This route is one of, if not *the* oldest brevet route in the Bay Area, used for PBP qualification in the 1980s. (NB: many of the roads have been repaved since then!) This event is a RUSA brevet, not an ACP event, is largely unsupported, and costs a total of $0 for reg fee. You do still need to sign up, and for the midweek 200kms, look for the option at the bottom of the registration page.
A heads up for our October events. As of today, it is very likely that the Winters 200km route will have an issue in that the Solano Bikeway path is closed, with that closure expected to end the day before our planned Winters 200km date. That timing won't work, so no later than one week before the Winters 200km date, SFR will decide if we can safely run that route, or if we will need to select a different route.
Trusting a bit more that the path repair will in fact be completed, SFR is hosting the late fall DART Populaire which is planned to use the Suisun City finish location. That event is on Oct. 18th. |

| I've hesitated to put my volunteer story here because I am not the only SFR volunteer. It is getting a little harder to find volunteers to provide the text, and since this is my 20th year volunteering for SFR (I volunteered before I became RBA), maybe it is time One big thing that has always prompted me to volunteer was the concern that SFR might fade away if no one stepped up. SFR did go dormant from 2000 until 2003, and I didn't want that to happen. That is the big picture, but in the small picture I step up to fill roles for each brevet, and keep my name as a fail-safe in case the role is otherwise unfilled. I really want each brevet to be the best event and for everyone participating to feel a sense of community. That community can't be detected if there is no support. Working the brevets and working behind the scenes in the admin roles for SFR, I've gotten to see people stepping up to support a club as it grew from 40 members to nearly 600 since the early part of the century. I also have been on hand to watch new people come into the sport and see their enthusiasm in finding an activity that resonates with them. And it has been a major kick to see any of those volunteers and riders line up for PBP every 4 years. - rob (photo by Mark Behning) |
