Has anyone tried Hammer Sustained Energy drink powder? I have been using
unflavored Perpetuem mixed with honey, ovaltine etc., but recently
noticed another powder called Sustained Energy. Has anyone tried this?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts,
Juliayn

Sustained Energy is great. I've used it for all my Ironman triathlons, but I haven't done any rides beyond 200miles yet, so take this with a grain of salt. It has less sugar than many powders so it bothers my stomach less. I don't like the taste of perpetuem, so don't drink it.

Yes, this was there first drink product prior to coming up with Perpetuem. It's pretty close to Perpetuem but a little less protein (I believe) and no flavor. If you don't add flavoring it taste like watered down cream of wheat, pretty bland. I've gone back to it as I became so sick of the Orange Vanilla Cream Perpetuem flavor and when it got warm... ugh! Which is probably why they just recently came up with unflavored Perpetuem... I like to mix 3/4 Sustained Energy with 1/4 Coffee Latte Perpetuem.

Just my two cents...

Hammer has a link to address the question "Q: Should I use Sustained
Energy or Perpetuem?" at the bottom of the Sustained Energy
description.

It links to this page:

http://www.hammernutrition.com/knowledge/the-hammer-nutrition-fuels-what-they-are-and-how-to-use-them.1252.html

Scroll down a bit to the section title "Comparing Sustained Energy and
Perpetuem."

"...Sustained Energy may be the ideal fuel choice when endurance
exercise intensity is at a higher level (approximately 70–85% MHR),
whereas Perpetuem may be a more attractive choice the longer the
athlete goes and when exercise intensity is at a more aerobic pace
(under 70% MHR). Additionally, over the years we have noted that
Sustained Energy may be the ideal choice for very lean athletes (the
“high metabolizer/hyper–metabolic” types)..."

I use both and the main difference for me is Sustained Energy has more caloric intake. I personally love and use all Hammer products pre-ride, during ride and post ride.

You can always mix Hammer Gel into Heed, Sustained Energy or Perpetuem but always test before committing to something on event day

Sustained Energy

343 calories for 3 scoops - scoops based on weight

1g Fat

10.5g Protein

112mg Sodium

73g Total Carbohydrates

            5g sugar

Perpetuem

270 calories for 2 scoops - scoops based on weight

4.5g Fat

7g Protein

220mg Sodium

54g Total Carbohydrates

            7g sugar

You can always use Hammer website for knowledge

I have found that SE falls out of solution more readily than Perp.

I have also found that I bloat more with Perp than SE.  I will gain 2 to 4 pounds after drinking 2 scoops of Perp per hour on a ten hour ride.  The weight gain disappears after three days or so.

In either case, Perp or SE, you need to supplement with electrolytes.

That’s my $0.02. for what it is worth.

Best wishes,

I currently use SE mixed with Spiz. I make up a 4hr bottle (800cals) and it provides smooth, even nutrition that tastes good even when it is hot outside.
No stomach issues. If you like chocolate milk, this may be a good option.

Some fast riders have gotten great results with Perpetuem. That’s all a rider used that finished ahead of my brother in the Quadzilla. These powders can get yucky quickly in hot weather and then have a short life. Plus more time needed to clean out water bottles. I tried and then switched to Perpetuem Solids last year. They definitely contributed to my success in the Alaska Big Wild Ride.  They were easy to carry in my top tube bag. Easy to reach and consume even in pouring rain. No wasted time trying to mix a bottle solution. The downside is that parts of these tablets stick to your teeth until they are completely dissolved. You are getting 100 calories per tablet plus various ingredients for about 40 cents.  Which seems reasonable to me versus some things I would have to buy to get 100 calories?  I like to eat real food whenever I can but these tablets can fill a void between controls/ rest stops.

You have to experiment to find out what works best for you. The more that is unprocessed and natural the better.

I'll second all that. I pretty much ride on a diet of Perpetuem Latte and I used the solids to good effect on PBP. They are very convenient to carry and access. I also use a plain water filled Camelbak and find that works very well to help digest the solids and flush out the remnants!

I'm fortunate that my system tolerates malodextrin well - not everyone is so lucky.

I've used both Perpetuem and Sustained (went through one year with multiple double centuries + a SR series all powered via hammer). Last year, for all of my rides + PBP I moved to just creating my own energy drinks and gels with bulk maltodextrin. It has roughly the same caloric density as sustained energy, is almost tasteless, and can be purchased for $1.29 a pound in 50 pound bags at E.T. Horn in oakland.

I either mix it in with my water like sustained energy, or I boil 4 cups of water with 16 cups of bulk maltodextrin (and a little crystal light for flavor) and make a ghetto equivalent of hammer gel.

I recently was recommended this site as a source of custom sports nutrition that you can mix yourself (I have not used the service myself yet).

Beware, it is a dizzying array of the base ingredients for a drink mix, so you have protein choices, carb choices, amino acid choices, mineral choices etc.
There is not a lot of help in making selections, in my opinion, but
 - the prices seem reasonable
 - there are protein powders and other items here that you might have difficulty finding elsewhere.
 - if you are vegan you can make a specific mix that reflects your life choices etc.

I gather there are forums at that website where people discuss mixtures etc.

I have used both over the years. Ingredients and amounts are very
similar.
Perpetuem is higher in protein. Overall, I think the Sustained Energy
flavors are better tasting, but a very cold bottle of Orange/Vanilla
Perpetuem is one of my favorites.
