Hi all. I need some training miles ahead of Gold Rush, and 'mI thinking about a mid August 300k. The Del Puerto 300k perm route could do, and I might reverse it so I hit the big hot climb before the day's max temperature.

Anyone want to take a look at this route and tell me if I'm missing anything? (e.g. road closures, unsafe traffic situations). Tesla Rd seems to be open again, and while it will be brutal climbing the steep part, I assume it's doable.

Del Puerto 300k in reverse:

Thanks!

Hi Arvi,

Looks like a great route. I wouldn't be looking forward eagerly to the false flat up Corral Hollow/Tesla Rd on a hot afternoon, but you're right that it's surely less imposing than DPC Rd at that time. I've not ridden Mines/DPC/Tesla in this direction but don't see why you couldn't/shouldn't.

A few thoughts:
* The big thing you're missing is that Wildcat Canyon Rd will be closing to ALL traffic on 8/11, through approximately December: https://www.contracosta.ca.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=4986 You could climb El Toyonal all the way up from Camino Pablo, but that just seems brutal that far into a ride, so I'd probably take the Lafayette-Moraga Trail to Pinehurst Rd instead. The bike-legal section of CA-24 to Fish Ranch Rd is another possibility, albeit an unpleasant one, especially in low light.
* I think it should be illegal to ride through Pleasanton without stopping at Meadowlark Dairy for soft-serve ice cream. I have converted an ever-growing posse to this point of view and you are welcome to join.
* SFR now uses a few different roads near Grayson to reduce time spent on CA-33.
I combined all the above, plus a slight modification at Las Positas and a switch to Skyline -> Redwood outbound (since you will be riding Pinehurst at the end of the day; one Pinehurst is probably enough), into the following route, whose turn cues I also cleaned up: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/52070177 It's five miles longer, mostly because of the Grayson reroute and because of avoiding Wildcat Canyon Rd, but doesn't add meaningfully to the overall challenge, I think.

Hope this helps, bonne route!

Oh my goodness, thank you, Drew. Too kind.

Very glad I asked the list about this bc I didn't know about the full Wildcat closure (or Meadowlark). If I do the route, I'll report back. (I'm also contemplating sticking to the cooler parts of the east bay & marin, and foregoing the chance for RUSA points).

You might consider starting at the Dublin BART station or Livermore Library so you knock out the big Mines Road and Corral Hollow (or Tesla and DPC depending on the direction) climbs before the heat and wind really kick in.

You could maybe have your cake and eat it too, by riding the Tam Tunitas 300K perm route. I haven't ridden this one myself but it looks stupendous and mostly sticks to cooler parts of the region.

Having recently done the Davis 600k, I experienced how much hotter it is in the Sacramento area than our region. If you are doing Gold Rush, you might want to consider the regular direction of this route and call it heat training... you will benefit from having some probably? just guessing!
However, the Wildcat closure is an issue... since I think I am the contact person for that route I will work on an alternate.
Bonne cyclismo
