As I recall, in 2019 there were rooms available because of riders cancelling right up to about a week before – the lodging window closed and opened and closed again multiple times. So I agree with the sentiment to not fret too much about lodging this early. There is time.
Personally I stayed in Paris before and after (JinUK and I ended up on the same train heading to Rambouillet for the start!) and I would *not* do that again because getting to Montparnasse early enough for the train, etc. wasted a few hours that could have been better spent relaxing and eating if I stayed closer. It will be SQY or Rambouillet for me next time.
But I’m not going to sweat any of that until this time next year.
That said, I believe there was unexpected spike in riders participating from India and Central/Southeast Asia in 2019 and if that means that randonneuring has become more popular there and they’ll continue sending a lot of riders, there might be more pressure on lodging going forward. But that’s unknown at this time.
FWIW, I do get a sense from all my Indian friends that long distance cycling is attracting more interest there and that’s awesome. I’d LOVE to travel there for some brevets. Dream trip!

Hey everyone!Fingers crossed that PBP 2023 is indeed in Rambouillet. It is such a beautiful example of a French medieval fortress village and it really heightens the French experience starting PBP in his historic locale.Just wanted to let everyone know that you do not need to wait to make lodging reservations. Obviously AirBnB is an option, but so are the local hotels. If you email a hotel directly, they can make reservations for you prior to the opening of the normal online reservation window. Check out the Google map to find hotels near the start.Greg Kline and I were able to get reservations at the Hotel Mercure Rambouillet Relays du Château, a beautiful hotel near the start with a full breakfast and very accommodating staff. They will store your bags during the ride so you do not need to reserve a room for the entire week. We stayed there in 2019 and could not have been more pleased! When I emailed, they had only had five other inquiries and plenty of room.Good luck everyone, now we just need to qualify!Best regards,
Stacy Kline
