In cotton, wool or hemp? In any event, those would be really cool!

I've seen things you people can't imagine.
Chimneysweeps on fire over the roofs of London.
I've watched kite-strings... glitter in the sun at Hyde Park Gate.
All these... moments will be lost... in time, like chalk-paintings... in the rain.
Time... for your nap.

it's held up pretty well. But I'd be interested in hearing the

Jim,

I can also attest to the wonderfulness of the wool Walz caps. I have one from Peace Coffee in MN, and it's really comfortable. Fits well, not too hot, and the brim is just stiff enough to shade my eyes from sun and oncoming headlights. I'd get a wool SFR cap in a heartbeat.

Definitely wool cap and we should start a new batch of SFR wool
jerseys too. SFR rides are swelling and need more SFR colors.

Another good local source for cycling caps is Alamedan Mary Elizabeth. Her company, Alloneword: http://allonewordhonestpatch.blogspot.com/  started out doing fine wool cycling caps (I have one - its very well made) but has since branched out into other materials. She just completed special caps for Aids Lifecycle and the TeamAlameda cycling club.

Mary would be happy to quote us on our own custom wool cap.

Yep, remember we talked about that a while back? I found a few of
places to do them. There are two very distinct cuts the classic cut (4
panes on top) and the "other" not so nice style. Also the very old
style that covers a little of the ears which I don't think offers as
good fit as the classic one.

Cotton ones are nice but they don't age as nice. Plastic fabrics last
longer. The same place where Gabe E mades his jerseys makes caps and
they can place almost any design on them. My preference would be for
something very traditional with not too many colors. Again I have the
SFR logo in two flavors the one we use in the jerseys and a round one
that can also be used in Water Bottles, another project that still on
its infancy.

I have a handful of cycling caps. One is made from some mystery cloth
that's almost plastic-like. It's uncomfortable and has like negative
performance characteristics or something. Wool would be super.
Cotton would be fine imho, but I'd probably wear it more off the bike
than on. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

I would dig wool or cotton for an SFR jersey. Also I particularly
fancy the black wool SFR jerseys that were made several years ago.
The one with the golden color band is particularly awesome! :)

Who ever takes this on (who knows, it could be me) I would urge that we not ignore quality when chasing price. I think that was one downside of our first wool jersey order (no offense intended to those who worked on that).

Just to make my earlier post clear, as it could be misunderstood, I am not saying by any means that Walz caps are not good quality. I do not have personal experience with those caps but at this point I do trust those that have endorsed Walz, and if Walz is as good as has been said, I hope the group doesn't go with some alternate simply because of price.

I've heard very good things about the Walz caps. I do have a Chuey

Swrve caps made in (gasp!) LA. Potentially by Dodger fans.

It seems most people preffer wool. If it was my call I would go with a LOCAL source like the one Alex pointed out (Alloneword: http://allonewordhonestpatch.blogspot.com/ ) There is a huge advantage to doing things with a local vendor like getting a size sample and being able to have  person to person conversations, plus well...it is local. A very good looking cap is useless if it does not fit.

So any volunteer to lead the effort? I can take care of the design and working with the vendor on this part but don't have the time to devote to the order placing/collecting money/paying the vendor etc effort.

I would buy a wool cap from Walz. They make fanstatic caps and they
will make a cap that will fit larger heads like mine. Little Package
(www.little-package.com) in Portland also makes some great caps. She
recently made some caps for Rapha.

I'd do wool (Walz wool is great), and/or cotton (the PACE caps that
Rivendell use are awesome).

Just make sure they fit people with big old noggins like mine.

I think we should get two runs of hats.  One run of cotton hats, another of wool.  For wool I think we should get a nice medium to lightweight wool.  I think we should use the woman from Portland for the wool hats.  I am leery about using a small/boutique/etsy manufacturer for the caps.  Even if they are local, a lot of the time they are slow and unresponsive.  It is nice to have someone small and local, but unless they are set up to produce a specific item on a regular basis,  consistent quality and turn around time can be an issue.  This is based on personal experience.
The walz wool caps are okay, but in my opinion they are way too hot and heavy and they have a floppy bill.
Chuey is very slow and the millering is not that great.
Pace needs large numbers but make great cotton hats, I think we should use them for a cotton hat.
I think we should start out with cotton, then do the run of wool and use the money made from selling the more accessible and easy to fit cotton hats to pay for the wool ones.
As for jersey's, I think we should do another run of Vollet made ones.  They should stil have the design on file, and we should be able to meet the reorder minimums easily.  While that order is processing, we should start looking into a wool jersey manufacturer.   OR, we go for a total graphics redesign, and wait on all the above until we have a graphic that we can use for lycra, wool, hats, bottles etc for 2011 and the big dance across the pond.
I also am willing to manage the ordering and disto of these items for the club if the club is willing.

Gabe, et al,

Regarding Jerseys, Todd Teachout is already on the case. A plan for both wool and lycra is in the works. Todd is well down the road on this so there is little to be gained from starting from scratch.

Regarding hats, I think the first order of business should be organizing all the different ideas and finding some way to rate them. You list a lot of details about criteria that I think should be used in the final selection. Jim has already agreed to organize things and move us toward an order, and Carlos has offered to help with the details regarding logo design and artwork that the manufacturer would need. If you have firm convictions about hat selection you and Jim should really compare notes. One vital point concerning the final design, material and maker should be delivery time. Whoever the manufacturer chosen is, we would be better placed if we knew their track record regarding meeting deadlines. For the sock order, The Sock Guy delivered ahead of schedule, and that was great to have.

Just back from the Moss Beach 200k (great ride) and thought I'd chime in on the SFR cap dialogue...

Cotton: I'm not a big fan of the cotton option.

Wool: I love the idea of a wool cycling cap if it has the same qualities of the merino wool products produced by Smartwool or Ibex....soft, stretchy, light weight, etc.  I don't really care for the heavy wool cycling caps I've seen, most of which are in the "tweed" direction.  They're typically extremely dense, almost felt-like, and don't breath.

Polyester: I currently have a 100% polyester cycling cap made by Pearl Izumi which is awesome.  Fits any headshape/size, moisture wicking properties, works great in warm or cool temps, the bill is not too soft and can be turned-up out of the way when needed; also has reflective logo on both sides of the bill and on the back of the cap....great for night riding.  It's the bomb...

My two cents...

There are 2 major patterns:
1) 4 panel, like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/pandaface/278411178/
2) 3 panel, seen here http://hypebeast.com/2010/05/rapha-maharam-cycling-cap-bespoke-exhibition/

Do we aiming for ear flaps too? Or we will put orders for different
designs?

For DIY types, check this:
http://www.break.com/usercontent/2009/4/How-to-make-a-cycling-cap-Threadbanger-705342.html

I had cycling caps of both designs, and 3-panel design fits my square
head better ;) My biggest problem with caps, the flap (visor) is
useless after several washes (handwash cycle).
