During the Point Reyes Populaire I was having some pretty sharp pain in one knee from about mile 30 on. Never been a problem before. I have been changing around saddles and clips lately, so maybe I've got something out of alignment. I'm thinking a professional bike fit might be in order, just to make sure all my bike/body mechanics are good. Can anyone recommend a good (and fairly inexpensive) place for getting a bike fit in the Bay Area (preferably SF)? And/or can anyone provide insight into Sports Basement's bike fit service (which seems to be a good deal)?
Thanks so much!

Hi Caitlin

There was a great thread on this topic, maybe more than one, a year or so ago. There were many recommendations and advice. Try searching the group list archives at groups.google.com

This might be a decent start:

Good luck with fixing your knee pain problem!

Check out links Eric provided. Also if you use look pedals then having cleats with right variation of cleat float (0°/ 4,5° / 9°) can make a big difference. I use gray (4,5) --  see Look's comments on cleat adjustment - plus right saddle height and adjustment. Knee problems with black -- red had too much float. Everyone different.

Hey Caitlin,

Sorry to hear about your knee woes! I had the worst time last year with knee pain in my right knee, and it took me forever to finally figure it out -- but it was my leather saddle. I just finished my blog post detailing my long, drawn-out process. I probably should have gone to a fitter from the get-go, but I was being silly and stubborn. (I recommend my friend Colin at Studio Velo, btw, or Montano Velo in Oakland.)

Cheers,

Jenny

Thanks, all! (Should have checked the archives first, but I appreciate the responses here!)
Funny you should mention the saddle, Jenny, as that is what I have switched too (a Brooks B17S) from a rather clunky Softail gel seat. Your blog post sounds familiar! I also am just using standard pedals with toe-baskets and straps (vs cleats). The pain is on the inside of my left knee, radiating up to the top of the knee after a while. Yesterday I went for a 42-mile ride around Paradise Loop though and it was the other knee that started to twinge... so, I'm confused. Will keep working on it though, as I want to do a 200K at some point this year. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
