Hi all! Good seeing many of you on the DPC 200k yesterday!
I am writing to extend an invitation to the entire SFR team to join me for my birthday brevet on 4/18 hosted by Eric Larsen and the Humboldt Randonneurs (thank youuuuu!).
When: the day before my birthday, aka Sat 18th April
Where: Arcata, Humboldt County
Why: Because we love bikes and it's good to be alive and get to suffer enjoy another day on the saddle!
Description: This challenging ride starts at the Arcata community center, cuts through pastures of the Arcata bottoms, then around the flat south-west side of Humboldt Bay. You continue around Eureka, first on the bay trail then up around Cutten, down to Freshwater where you start to climb over 2800ft to the Kneeland towers with beautiful views of Humboldt Bay. You’ll enjoy a long descent inland, down to Maple Creek on the partially paved Butler Valley Road. This road has many gravel sections, wider tires (32mm+) are recommended. After a few more climbs you will make it to Blue Lake. Then you’ll go through Glendale where you can stop at Murphy’s grocery store, a good place to restock food. Continuing through rolling hills to Fieldbrook, up to Dow’s Prairie, cutting through Westhaven to Trinidad. Now that all of the biggest climbs are behind you, head out and back on the coast along the rough (but scenic with ocean views) to Sumeg State Park. Back on the partially paved (with more ocean views!) Scenic Drive. Down to Clam Beach. Following the Hammond Trail that takes you through McKinleyville, across the Mad River, back to the farmland of the Arcata bottoms, and finally returning to the community center through downtown Arcata.
Hope to see you there, or any other time on the road!
