Hi Randonneurs,

This is a question for those of you that ride long distance with platform pedals and straps.
What brand pedlas and straps?
What type of shoes work best?

Thanks,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

I like the MKS Lambda pedals but do not use straps any more. They are long and wide pedals so they have a large platform and a decent amount of grip. I like wearing my 510 Dirtbag shoes because they have a relatively sticky sole, are reasonably stiff and are comfortable on and off the bike, especially in cold weather. I don't like wearing my Puma shoes on longer rides because the sole is too thin and flexible.

I've noticed that switching shoes changes the fit of the bike noticeably. For example, I'll often commute to work in my Pumas, which have a thinner sole than my 510's do. If I ride a moderate distance in the Pumas I can feel it in my knees - I keep the bike fit for my 510's so I wear those on longer rides.

Eric

I'm partial to White Industries and Toshi straps for comfort and durability (although admittedly, they're not cheap); I usually wear flat-soled shoes like Vans or Converse with them. (And I just use the WI pedals sans straps now, but TBO uses this combo on his rando/porteur bike.)

Cheers,

Jenny

If you not riding fixie, you may decide to skip straps altogether.
+1 for MKS Lambda pedals (aka Grip Kings).
Flat-soled shoes with some thickness. I personally like Merrell with some cushion (6mm+). Converse and likes (Vans?), might be too thin.

On the other hand, if you asking this question and riding long distance (600km?) :O I would not be up for such a big change myself, but I'm known too be soft...

Many longish rides on platform pedals without straps guy (to qualify for vintage category ;)
