It was sad to hear that the Golden Gate 1000 need to be cancelled.
I feel for all the work and preparation that has gone into it.
Dan, thank you for organizing and planning this great ride. It such a nice route with 100 miles of dirt riding. I believe that you made the right decision.
I hope that everybody that was getting ready for the ride at least got the bike all tunned and ready for adventure.
Cheers,
Ernesto

1. Golden Gate 1000km cancelled, alas
Sadly, we've had to cancel the Golden Gate 1000km that was due to start on Thursday. With forecast temperatures on the route for the first two days on either side of 110F we felt the prudent path was to cancel. The reason why this was a cancellation and not a postponement is that even by moving the event 36 or 48 hours later, we would lose most of our volunteers plus our finish control location which had to be someplace that allowed overnight presence. Timing was also bad in trying to move the event to a much later date.
This was a tough decision made by the organizer of the event, Dan Beringhele, who had put in a lot of effort getting the event put together. However, it was a very prudent decision.
2. August 600km results
SFR held not one but two 600km events in August. The first, and marquee 600 was the Orr Springs which completed the 2022 Adventure Series, and a week later we ran a reprise of the Mendocino Coast 600. Each of these were ACP events and offered riders a chance to move up a phase for PBP 2023 pre-registration. (Ed. Note: yes, those using the Old Caz for that purpose were taking on a much bigger challenge on that count.)
There were four finishers for the Orr Springs 600km. Of those four finishers, the first to finish set a new course best time of 33h37m. To put that in persepective for how challenging the Orr Springs route is, that same rider has completed the Mendocino Coast 600, not thought of as an easy 600k route, in 8 hours less time.
For the 2nd 600k in August, we had 6 finishers and 5 of them completed their first ever 600km, all of them have PBP 2023 aspirations. Here are those 5 first time 600km finishers:

3. The SFR Adventure Series and Roy Ross Award Contenders for 2022
Just a refresher on the award and its criteria. For many years Roy Ross finished all four events in the Adventure Series and earned the Adventure Series Award. In most of those years Roy was the *only* rider to finish all four events. With Roy's passing in 2020, we renamed that award after him. Last year, the first two riders to earn the Roy Ross award for completing the Marin Mountains, Old Caz, King Ridge and Orr Springs events in one year were Bryan Kilgore (Organizer of the Adventure Series!) and Dan Pannell.
The criteria for earning the award is that no less than three of the components of the Adventure Series must be ridden as calendared brevets. Riders can complete one of the routes as a RUSA permanent if necessary, but no more than one may be a permanent. (NB: this is relaxed in years in which SFR can't host all four brevets, such as in 2021 when our calendar was impacted by the Covid pandemic.)
As of September 6, 2022 we've completed all of the brevet offerings in the Adventure Series and we have two riders who have qualified for the Roy Ross Award:
4. Calendar highlights
While the 1000km was canceled because of once-a-century extreme heat, we have not cancelled the Freestone 200 that is set for Saturday. One big reason for that is that with the route much closer to the coast, the high temperature along the route will only be 79F. Signups for Freestone normally close on Wednesday night, but if you can't confirm until later, SFR will refund your reg fee through Thursday if you sign up, or can make alternate registration arrangements on Thursday if you miss the registration form deadline.
Also, a reminder that we are running 3 brevets on Saturday, September 24th and you have your choice of a 100, 200 or 300km route.
Signup for these and any remaining 2022 brevets can be done here.
Work is well underway on mapping out the 2023 brevet calendar. SFR will of course be offering a full series. We'll also be bringing back the Nighttime 200km and a double brevet weekend in 2023. Each of these offers it's own form of prep/training for doing a 1200k. The Nighttime 200 lets riders gain more experience riding through the night but not when they are already tired and riders can sleep once they finish. The double brevet weekend allows riders to gain experience getting back on the bike for a 2nd day of riding, but in this way only after a full night's sleep, in a bed.
What will not be on the SFR calendar for 2023 is the Fleche NorCal. Davis has asked to host that event in 2023.
At this time, no 1000km events are planned for SFR in 2023.
It is very likely thought that SFR will participate in a Brevet Week held sometime in June which would allow riders the last chance to complete a qualifier (or all their qualifiers) before the PBP deadline.
5. Volunteers needed for 2022 and 2023
SFR could use a volunteer coordinator for the Winters 200km scheduled for October 15th. The role of VC would simply be to round up volunteers, including picnic volunteers, to cover the event and to act as coordinator for the date should things come up. As mentioned, there will be the traditional staffed lunch at City Park in Winters.
For 2021 and 2022 the RBA was also volunteer coordinator for nearly all the events held, but this is not sustainable especially in a PBP year. When the calendar is issued for 2023, likely in the next week in draft form, and by Oct. 1st for final, approved form, please take a look and see if there is a brevet for which you can be volunteer coordinator and then send an email to volun...@sfrandonneurs.org.
6. SFR Jersey projects
Once we get the 2023 PBP artwork we will begin work on new order for SFR jerseys. Our wool jersey vendor is working to supply a hybrid wool/synthetic jersey. We would have 100% wool, and the hybrid version on offer, plus one with either PBP graphics or without. For 100% synthetic jerseys, we would be offering the same pbp logo/no pbp logo options.
Details to follow.
