Hi Rob,
How would you rate your proficiency with a soldering iron? I have had a few battery-type things stop working, and 90%+ of the time it is simply due to a soldering joint that has come loose. It could be a simple fix.
Soldering joints have become slightly more brittle, as the world produces very few leaded solder joints these days. 'Tis a pity, too, as leaded solder makes very nice connections. Too bad it's not good for kids' brains (maybe not adult's brains either).
So, we've decided that less-robust electrical connections is a small price to pay for better young-brain development, and overall less violence in the world. I tend to agree with this tradeoff.
(Interesting side note: the Economist did a survey about a couple years ago of the places where leaded gasoline is still used in high percentages. Top of list: Syria, Iraq [until recently], and sub-Saharan Africa)
